My name’s Almas Ben-Aribia. For my undergraduate course I studied Human Biology BSc at the
University of Birmingham and then I switched to study the graduate diploma in Legal Studies
at the University of Birmingham.
My name is Tracey McLean. My undergraduate study was in Business Administration. I am
currently studying Computer Science at the postgraduate level at the University of Birmingham.
I decided to change direction and study a new subject area, just because science really
wasn’t for me, it wasn’t where my interests truly lie and I didn’t really enjoy lab
work. So by switching to Law I was able to really kind of find out where my interests
truly lie and put into practice what I enjoy thinking about and discussing in my spare
time.
I decided to change direction and study a new subject area because the career opportunities
associated with my undergraduate study did not provide me the opportunity to excel in
areas that I was interested in or passionate about.
I’d recommend someone in a similar position as me to change at the University of Birmingham
because if you’re not 100% sure where your career lies then it’s always good to explore
other options and I think the University of Birmingham has a selection of courses that
are available for you to find out where your interests really lie.
I would certainly recommend changing direction to anyone who is in a similar position because
not only will you learn the fundamentals of the subject areas that you’re interested
in but you will also be challenged.
To prepare yourself for making a career change really is to make sure that you’ve spent
time speaking to people, you’re researched and you’ve really found out – you’ve
explored your career options and found out what it is that you need to do once you’ve
completed your postgraduate course, because I guess entering a career at probably at a
stage than many of your peers, it’s important to make sure that you are really one step
ahead.
To prepare for a change in my new career direction I did a lot of research into the job market
to ensure that there would be a lot of jobs available in the area that I was interested
in.
In the future I hope to have specialised as a Barrister in Clinical Negligence or Personal
Injury. That way I’ll be able to bring across some of the aspects that I used for my undergraduate
course as well.
In the future I am intending on studying a PhD in the subject area because I have found
it very very interesting.
I would definitely recommend studying at the University of Birmingham because it’s a
really renowned institution, it’s got an amazing campus and the quality of the teaching
is really superior.
I would certainly recommend studying at the University of Birmingham because not only
do the staff offer professionalism but they are friendly and supportive and the environment
is relaxed but yet challenging.
