In this online demo, I’ll give you an introductory tour of the Chinese Research Perspectives Online.
But first, let me give you some background information on the product.
This online resource presents volumes from the former Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Yearbook series
and the new Chinese Research Perspectives book series, in an XML, full-text searchable format.
Compared with the former Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Yearbook series,
the new series contains more critically selected material reviewed by Western scholars.
In addition, the content is of greater relevance to non-Chinese audiences.
Now you can search across articles published in each of the six subseries categories.
These include: Economy, Education, Environment, Legal Development, Society, Population and Labor
The content covers research developments in China of particular interest to a Western audience,
and includes first hand insights into the discussions of China’s top scholars.
The benefits of the online resource include:
Content from the former series and new series available in a central resource
All volumes and chapters are cross-searchable
New content is added on an annual basis
There are a few ways to navigate the resource.
To browse the volumes published in each category, click on “Subjects” and choose the relevant subject title.
A second click on the category will expand the list of volumes.
Clicking on the volume title will breakdown the content on a chapter level.
You can also search by keyword.
Back on the main page, you’ll see the keyword search bar at the top. Let’s search for “Olympics”.
On the dropdown menu to the right, you can choose whether to search within the Chinese Research Perspectives Online, or across all online resources in the Brill reference works platform.
The default option will limit your search to results within the Chinese Research Perspectives Online.
A keyword search for “Olympics” yields results about the Beijing Olympics relevant to the environment, security and economics.
Let’s click on the first article.
One the right, a table of contents gives you an overview of subsections in the article.
Click on one of the subsection titles to jump ahead to that portion in the text.
Footnotes are highlighted in blue. Hover your mouse over the number to see the citation text display, or click on it to jump ahead to the footnote itself.
You can also use the online version in tandem with the print volumes.
For example, if you want to find a particular passage in the corresponding print version, hover over this symbol, the pilcrow, with the cursor to see the volume and page number.
For more detailed search options, click on “Advanced Search” underneath the search button.
Here you can search for exact phrases or combinations of words, search by author, title or subheading.
You can also exclude particular words or phrases.
The Chinese Research Perspectives Online also includes several indexes to help you find what you’re looking for.
Here on the home page, the indexes are listed below the subjects. When you expand the menu, you will see each index per volume, as well as a cumulative index.
