Hi, I'm Patti German, and I'm a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, here in New York City.
In this clip, we're going to talk about how to comfort a friend, after a breakup. Breakups
are usually very, very devastating, and really hurtful. I think the most important thing,
is to allow your friend to be able to speak with you, and hear what really bothers her,
or him, without judging it, and saying, Well, if you did this, this way, then that wouldn't
have happened. I think it's important to just really listen, and create what I call, a holding
environment, so that your friend can feel safe, to really talk to you about what happened,
about how it feels, about, and to encourage, that life can go on, and you can form new
friendships, and another relationship. After a relationship breaks up, many people feel
that they don't want to ever be in a relationship again, and I think part of being a good friend,
is to just be there to listen, and to hear what the details were, about the breakup,
and help your friend feel encouraged, to be ok, to go back out in the world. This is Patti
German, in New York City.
