Question 9 : Can Dato' explain about Unity Government and why PAS does not want to cooperate with UMNO?
At times, we are the victim in encountering this experience.
We accept the fact
that unity is needed in the society.
Pas joined Perikatan in the 70’s after the May 13th.
In fact, the May 13th incident must not be forgotten.
I told Lee Kuan Yew in the meeting
that the May 13th incident only took place in Kuala Lumpur, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan
which were the states ruled by UMNO
The May 13th incident did not occur in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and other states under our ruling
In fact, Dato’ Asri commanded Pas youths
to provide protection to the Chinese in Kota Bharu and control other youths in their localities
This simply shows we are not involved in the May 13th incident.
Tun Razak invited us to join Perikatan after the commotion began.
We then joined them with certain conditions which they accepted
However after Tun Razak passed away, other undesirable matters appeared
This is our experience working with Perikatan.
I initiated the idea of the Unity Government during Tun Abdullah Badawi’s preceding
When he was the PM he showed positive responses towards changing the jurisdiction system
changing the SPR and media policies.
It is known how our media in Malaysia offers not as much freedom as what we have here in the UK.
During the election period, only them (UMNO) has the privilege to use the media freely but not us.
There are times my face appeared to only mime words in the TV.
How do we get to answer the issues raised?
We just can’t. This is not democratic.
This happens.
Unity government will only work if Tun Abdullah Badawi changed the freedom of media, economy and education democracy.
For example, Bumiputeras are given the priority in terms of help.
We are not denying the DEB which is meant to help the Bumiputeras.
At the same time,
other races such as the Indians in the estates,
Chinese in Kampung Baru
They did not get any land ownership when moving to Kampung Baru in the commotion period.
They must not be neglected
The East Malaysian citizens must not be neglected as well.
This is not right.
In fact, the privileges for the Bumiputeras are not executed properly.
Those who support them will get the privilege but not those who are not.
This is unfair.
Correction must be done.
If Tun Abdullah really intended to make these changes,
therefore I suggested the idea of Unity Government during that time
when vote of no confidence in the parliament failed.
16th September.... You might not forget the failed vote of no confidence in September 16th.
Why did it fail?
We know that the UMNO members of parliament have problems
and recorded corruption files in BPR making them not brave enough to vote for vote of no confidence.
That is when the idea of Unity government came.
When this happened,
I presented the idea of unity government to Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim and he agreed.
I then met Tun Abdullah Badawi who suggested only Pas and UMNO involved in the proposal.
I disagreed. That’s not unity.
If it is only Pas and UMNO involved then it is not called unity.
That is not right. We argued.
The Unity Government is meant for all parties in the government.
What we want is , Pas, Dap, PKR and UMNO all are in the government with equal power.
Equal power to improve justice and rights in the media.
Every party has the rights.
For example, Indonesia, the concept of Unity Government was implemented after Suharto ruling, when Golkar party lost.
Just like in Britain after World War 2 if I’m not mistaken. Ireland once had a Unity Government too.
In South Africa, Mandela managed to overcome Apartheid issues with Unity Government.
In order to solve the matter, I introduced the Unity Government.
Initially, the ex prime minister, Tun Abdullah Badawi agreed
but when the time came, he chickened out. He quitted his post.
Therefore, the Unity Government is meant for Tun Abdullah Badawi’s period,
as for Najib’s, it is irrelevant.
It is no longer relevant now.
This is due to his ignorant attitude towards making any changes. Changes in jurisdiction
Changes in SPR and anti-corruption commission are not happening rightfully.
As such, the issue is not relevant. It is now a history.
Unfortunately, the news deliberately makes the issue more sensational.
If you read the media before the Pas election,
you’ll find out that this issue is used to cause dispute amongst Pas members.
Alhamdulillah, we managed to hold our assembly successfully.
Eventhough they say that we're in chaos, but we never fight amongst us.
We never fight.
Its normal to have disagreements in ideas amongst members in meetings, but we never fight.
Moreover,we solve our problems. We’re still in good condition.
They walk pass by our houses, they think they hear us arguing and fighting.
But we are not fighting.
We are just rearrangging the furnitures.
Thats all. Not fighting at all.
Yet they think that we are. That is not right.
It is all settled now. I reelect those who are not elected.
Dato’ Husam is reelected, so as Mohamad Sabu. All are reelected.
If it’s UMNO, they will get rid of their men whom had lost in their election.
This is the difference between us.
Therefore, the Unity Government is not an issue now.
This is because it was meant for Tun Abdullah Badawi’s period.
And the issue of merging with UMNO that has problems,
internal corruptions and leading the country with corruptions is not relevant at all.
They themselves are corrupted.
In Malay they say its like, 'pikul biawak hidup (having a parasite)'
We gain great pain and losses carrying a parasite.
We have no reason what so ever to compromize with UMNO. Let them help themselves out
For that reason, there shouldn't be any more issue
of having a unity government with UMNO.
Thank you.
