good morning
thank you so good to be
here it was just wonderful to hear that last action and how
even well some of you were in the beginning faces your passion your love
for students who want for your discipline
it's just so evident and it's an honored to be among you and listening to you in
working with you
and given that i'd also put together a presentation that's
a little bit complicated because i had a whole lot of handouts are
camera ready activities that i wanted you to take into the classroom
and kinda experiment with them
so i have a whole bunch of handouts
but couldn't we didn't think logistically it was really uh... in
anybody's best interest to
not produce on that would've been hundreds and hundreds of pages
so if you look at the one thing and i did make the u
on one side of it it has different country
and that is our own privacy
are
c_q_ are something kind of
and that you can get that with your smartphone
in it you can just click on that in it will take you to all all of these
documents
sub of these are posted on my google docs in my campaign you have open access
to them and they're all camera ready
said that if you like any of them you can use them immediately
uh... and and i'm gonna be referring to them and we're going to be showing them
to you on that on the big screen interest as we go through the
presentation
here we go
the first thing i was i've noticed when almost all of you talked about and even
last night when i had an opportunity to talk with just a few of you
his dad
there's a lot of giving out that stuff
as as well as there's a lot of gain but that's kind of the nervousness at any
kind of a redesign this
one of my gonna give up
and whatev what if the value of what i'm gaining as opposed to what i'm getting
up
and in the car honesty
we're building ourself veggies were just blending them
so all the things that we're doing in our reading class
we can bring them to into the writing class in all the things that we're doing
in our writing class we bring them into the reading class and that's the true
nature of the integration
he said we don't
defeat your health
a new way to do with every little lesson in the class
we just have to figure out how to
glow
have a set up the flow of instruction
so that students can make that reading writing connection
so proposed are you're building on what you already know you have so much prior
knowledge
into jharkhand if you look at that handout again on the page that has the
kind of
on that side of the page i have the last
and this is like how you put it in the format of the pre
learning as michael reading strategy you know like what you want already know
so if you look at this last
if you just went down the list in writing that front four
a frequent use to one i've never heard of it
just take a moment and just
look at this last and evaluate your prior knowledge of the things that were
going to be looking at today
now probably should have really done this because now you can see on that
anything new fit
except maybe how to put these together in a flow of instruction that makes the
reading writing connection
uh... so what we're gonna try and do is we're trying to use the teachers acts
teach students
that what they're really doing is they are assuming two perspectives we're
gonna think like a reader and they're gonna think like a writer
indicate that the people are already free far into the redevelopment you can
see that
although we're making the reading writing connection
it is not that they're doing them both simultaneously
and any given moment they are usually either redeemed or writing
which is why it did lend itself to early attempts where you would do first for
the semester beating and he would build on that pedagogy bank then taking them
into a riding focus
so that's not necessarilly and and and uncommon approach
uh... into but they because they're doing either one of the other
the exception to that is when they're doing all of the real writing to learn
activities that are associated with what their reading and we'll talk about those
in a few minutes
all up what you're doing in your classroom is in the reading pedagogy we
call them directly taking activities
if you need a writing teacher has always done it directed banking activity
so what you're really doing all these things that i'm showing you today on
facebook that isn't
good solid reading pedagogy
and the other part of the directed learning activities is
i think all the faint a lot
and that comes up out of the reading pedagogy
where you really do verbalize the mental process
that are returned to us through understand to make meaning
so if i'm reading something at the first thing is what's the title
but is that really made me think that what they predict what this is going to
be in town
happy take that it's about
uh... x_y_ and z_
what now later in the reading i see that my prediction was wrong so i had to
recounted to readjust my prediction
and had to give up my life i was thinking
to what the authors really think he think it out loud with them
in the writing
arena back has been the role of
pierre editing
really and truly if you think about it if we ask our students to really tell us
how they got to the point where that what it what do you get like a batch of
paper
what gave me the greatest problem with this essay
that's i think a lot
now riding teachers have been doing thing clouds for a long time which is
sam reading pedagogy
and had even really been aware that that's what they're doing unless they've
had the training in the reading
so we can you're already doing many of these things it's just figuring out how
to do it again in a very deliberate
directed thinking activity with the logical flow at best hopes your students
factors that make it very imperfect
now this is where some of their why do we gain what do we lose kind of thing
comes into
not having a dedicated reading class or dedicated writing class
uh... but what we're asking our students to do whether it's in
separate classes are coming together
were asking then to read to learn
just i mean that's what the textbooks are all about when they can get their
psychology in their humanities and their biology and their math and all of that
it's just reading
to learn
so learning how to read a textbook
is it a little bit different learning activity then reading to learn the news
you know if we're gonna ask them to read about current events
week asking them to learn as we read about their world
up to seven learning to reading to learn reading to learn excuse me the language
i think about the literature classes that we talked for years and years
where we were talking teaching them poetic uh... what you know what
what is the neck ticking
you know what is a
or limiting the back to that to the developmental level
unsettling
how to really use a sitcom
readings to learn how to use this in the colonies of really wonderful activity
that can be incorporated into that
the writing class it becomes a reading activity
it might be going to the newspaper and deciding how many times they use a
cynical and
and then trying to identify the type of senate that the author used for that
cynical
we need to learn
unit and and using reading as a model
to learn structure
to model the language into riding tomato language in structure
in our developed forces and even our love and i are freshman composition
courses for form
many many many people maybe not everybody
the riding experience has been the writers warns
effect has sometimes been a really
difficult
uh... magistrate difficult business intention in trying to get students to
tap into the prior knowledge
and find the topics
but deeply for development of students who haven't had a lot of reading
experience
haven't had a lot of connection with taxed
it only takes a look anything to write about
if you do with the taurus with so much for coming
equipment
renewal what you would like to do nothing
i mean he said that they did they have classes they just on the sicily
disclosed to us
so under writing to express our ideas as where uh... personal always is where
most of our writing instruction has been in the past
and now with the with this we were looking to have writing to responded to
another person's taxed
but that's not the only way to make the reading writing connection
it doesn't have to be that every single writing assignment has to be the read
something in the navy sponsor that because there's all these other ways in
which you can use reading and writing to learn
as directed learning activities that would bend build ought to be reader
response
it's not like that has to be the on the way they should be overriding for
purposes
and that sort of a talk about with the rest of the scandal
now this is all hyperlinks staff here i have to actual documents these are the
things that i was going to actually
pull out for you in
and on that uh... i mean can you know what you would hit you *** and i
thought we'd be looking at them but we're gonna look at most of them on the
screen
the first when you have if you would click on that first one reminds strategy
packets this one
who any mention that i am working on a integrated reading and writing tax but
uh... and long not been and unwind with you
i'm right with you in terms of trying to create a recommended smeeting kalimantan
call
social early on i wanted to bring the writing process and the reading process
and really stop and think about
how does that truly occur
and because i see this as a visual
i want to give them a graphic i want them to be able to see i want them to
have something in their hand that's tangible
that they can be first he was like a baseline document
throughout the entire semester that they're with me and also when they move
into their higher level courses
you transfers are really difficult concept
they they'll organize course
they passed the test for us and then they go into those content forces
and teachers come back if they want you to complete my queen
diac
so when i give students something like this i'd tell mom
if in your content courses
take this with you this is something that you can use for the rest of your
academic career
now the way in which this handout
uh... is presented to you it's it's uh... like in in the book that i'm doing
it just has the spread but it doesn't have the little self-assessment to it
this is an actual self-assessment tool
so when i went and spent the day with this isn't a very
first week of school we were waiting for that attendance i don't know if it's
like this in your school then
our college attendance takes a couple of
days two weeks to kind of settle down
they keep adding people to the classes that there's not a cap you know
so uh...
in those first weeks when you feel like maybe you you really can't get a whole
lot of pedagogy out there because you have to repeat it
this is a wonderful thing for students to look at the same one of my doing
and because we think differently
you when i have a very different writing approach
you when i have a very different reading approach
there about a hundred people in israel
there's a hundred different ways to read and write something
and the difficulty i've always had trying to write for educators
is that they wanted this living here
feted assignments ok give me your topic
give me your topics in it
give me your outline giving your first draft
and then i couldn't get that done
just couldn't get it
you know i have to get him out
my draft the night before
and so i always miss those preliminary deadline to see something about the way
that my mind works what doesn't work
linearly like that
and many of our development all students are like that as well
simply something like this in front of them is not saying deal with this way it
saying here is a strategy
with a lot of compost asked
one of these steps would you find helpful
what are you even doing right now
and i'd like to do this systematically throughout the semester like they do the
first week of school
might do it in midterm and i do it in the final
and distance monthly
helping keep changed
you'd be in somebody asked earlier about what about you checked the notebook
uh...
this is a wonderful you know that uh... the dreaded word his portfolio
new portfolio assessment and
but this is a wonderful notebook activity
and it's like just done or not done
you know you have to find a certain number of points were being done
and on the back i asked them to write
you know what does this mean
or have you back to the first assessment self-assessment
the next time i do it
have you changed what's changed about you
instance kits and excited because it concrete thinkers in many ways
and they want something really can do what they show their growth
so this really really helps them
yeah all the other hand outs that we have
would be a matter of where
do reply gideon to this handout to this process
seltzer
police would not because they have to spend a lot of time
respond now
well then okay they turn this in with their first reader response to me
and if the reader response indicates a lack of planning
a lack of proofreading
here we go back to their self-assessment and asap universal clarification here
well
i feel it you said that she did that
how much time did you spend on that and make so it also gives *** educators
away to really diet knows
where their true needs are and then take individualized that curriculum
based on the air bag
hey here's and their disclosures
thing about students is development status is that
i don't think that they've really met dot just to palestinians uh... a lot of
students who struggle because not all struggling students are
clearly identified this development students
their self-esteem is sometimes skewed like it could be a bit with the person
that really has told me that they megan k
with their attitude too
you they just don't get me
right
or how about that
student is returning after a long time away this uh...
near is
and comes up after class and pass the most pertinent questions you respect he
or she passed in front of everybody
and then make the meeting
one
and think that
i do a lot of com uh... self-assessment a lot of meta cognitive
uh... where they have to talk about their own learning and i'll pass them
prediction break every time they turn something in what do you think you made
on this how do you think this perform
and this
uh... students who think they made and a you know last semester
ally meeting any and automated a few don't like this is something wrong with
you
and that really how long and there is still in its like builders
i know i feel this
neither one of those are balanced abuse are realistic views
so having something like this
teaches them how they'd be honest with themselves
because it does require asking them to go back and revisit it
when they've given askew dancer in a sentence a dishonest because i don't
think that they're necessary trying to be dishonest
i think that they will be destroyed along with
uh...
realistic self
self-assessment
you know that felt the sting
so answer and that bluster in person
that person is coming in this insecure
in hiding behind that bluster
and doesn't want anybody to know
you know so
this really helps us get some of the objective concrete na emotional way
although they do get emotional
he comes back to its not about me it's about your behaviors
okay let's go to the next one
but i have created a holistic rubric that is both the reading writing rubric
because uh... the whole purpose the rubrics for me
are not for me
i mean they are for me to help me scored happens we're really quickly
they were to cut down on my work time i'd like to do a lot of holistic scoring
and uh...
are very thoughtful and well-placed trade foreign throughout the semester
but it does not meaningful
in assisting us understand it is this feedback for them
that they understand what this river tears and i can ask them to school reach
others papers or a set of rangefinders that are anonymous
uh... back bring to the client
so that they can
learn the rubric
because if they don't know
the standard happened they live up to the standard
you know sally night even sometimes asked them to apply this to the
real writers that we bring into the classroom because sometimes you know
uh... like event's stephen king uh...
why we crave harmonies and distorting the tennessee right now
if you're really put this rubric their iniki didn't have stephen king's name on
it you have a whole bunch of different stores from educators in the classroom
you know i mean we all have what we've been telling you
so you know it really i mean even as students to look in since show that
there's a wide variety
you know and what your striving for his to identify what your needs are
an imprint you warned me
end and then also again says that they can be stronger or where they need
remediation
entirely to divide my semester into you'd be directed thinking activity so i
talked about earlier
high compared to five months semesters in two three phases
even with the summer sessions which were quite short like yours yourself sniffers
are now because of refreshing for six weeks
on the first few uh... weeks four days para whatever set a time
everything they do is for diagnostic purposes
i get on the peace of homework they don't do it im hae anticommunist
something
it is a symptom of something
uh... it they hired uh... don't do the rehoming what they do and what they
don't do in response to my assignments
gives us information that we can identify their strengths and their needs
so i think in the best except that seven time whatever time it is the diagnostic
time
handsome together into a notebook
and and then and maybe some of the things that they could gather into that
notebook
this is just you know that uh...
one thing i think that they had a little bit
i asked him these questions
what do i already know what do i need to learn how will my textbook help me learn
how lauren center my lab help me what any fat times if i set aside for this
course
so what i'm asking them to do is to take every set everything that i've asked of
them care peace corps that they did they put their bravery they've gotten support
assignments from me at home with the one in a trade for twenty
they've got notes that they should've been taking and classic that textbook
net anything that they did for this class is that there's no busy work
and everything prints and pretty
and i'm convinced if you make an effort you'll or
because you've got a wonderful burning
and if you just do it you've been a really were
so i'd ask them to give me this latter
on after they do that and i do find that they do need to revise that because
they've never been asked to think
my students and family never really asked her to think about their own
learning
they turn things and and and people
uh... gave him a great and then they feel that great awakening a group that
may never look at it again and that's the difference between our students
and the gifted students
was gifted students have or the successful students p
everything
and makes him and you want anything on everything
i taught high school for three years i made it to three cheers
and gifted program cannot skills to get that i had the whole realm
and i'll never forget this one guy that was
uh... hitting missed the question what with a monologue
so it's one of the task as i want to go to protest with them so they can see
what they get wrong and that they did tell me why i think that something wrong
with
we use is wrong
that your definition of a monologue is just one he said you know i was in a
play next year
correct
had the cedar degree
and at that time
well i thought you were just in english teacher
to you
welcome back to you know as we speak to really look at the palestinian actually
disagree with the property because thomas misused
wendy heaven on earth
at would be star wonderful pastoral like that
pinged me challenge me
i want to tell my status if you really think and i'm giving you an unfair great
pay your work to my supervisor
don't take it to let them look at it
you know what they agree with you i don't think my wife
and i had a couple people take me up on that in their work speaks volumes
an important lesson for them
you know that they have to understand that they need to do their andrea just
now
most students respond to this
so wonderfully because it gives them a real path
direction annex makes them think about themselves in ways that they have a
thought before the second phase of the semester is the working face and this is
what they're doing the bulk of the coursework
every single thing we do
this is where when they said that i missed anything in class today after you
better
and you can find out what do you think they can be in your notebook
because that's how you're getting credit
time on task as well as climbing casting you're gonna find work on task
the higher quality yet
so and rethink and
effects to get one thirty-three pretrial president lambda went there
moving out and said this is
there
instead of wind up going on there when you're frustrated
consistent demand and this arguing free ride on a particular about stallone
needed
to remind you
effort chilled
if you show me the effort you're gonna do it
so all of these are the things that could possibly be in a working portfolio
within the next twenty-four think have often began
uh... what i need to learn why does my bare your
what steps like overcome this barrier
and then you can see where the affect of domain here because the students really
need this
now i know you thinking happening to all of this might be me and i think i'm
distance
reading and writing
this is writing to learn
right here this is that a cognitive and this is preparing them in albany in
their mind too that they can accept the ideas of other people
is a lot of times what these students are doing
if they're running to take as they're beating
i don't understand this i can't get this i don't like to read
coming pages to have to go
restocking detailed
you know
they gotta take going on
so what we're trying to do is we're trying to be
marie
in did that take
replace that take
and then the last one which is the last little bit of the semester is there
despite
when each use their best works to prove mastering
and then all three portfolios are all three sections of the net net of
notebook returned and at the end of semester
and their greatness
actually gave three different grades for each portfolio and that filled with an
average of those grades
uh... this was very very quick to do because i had a lot of
i'd rubrics i had checked length by hat
on their record computers a div individualized and
computer instruction of it but they're albums and at the end of the plot you're
right there i think it's the whole class in one day
uh... so that i mean is really a narrow just paying attention to them
last month
doing transport
windows but with the poem and the prints for that was a little bit more you know
works settled at longer
but a notebook check can be a very very quick thing in effect if the work isn't
there then it's an opportunity to intervene and find out why
and then allotted time just because of their infected deming
near this study skills their life crises the even
you know how to stop in the middle of the confession saying you know
i don't want you to feel like it to tell me this you know
cuz i know this is a problem
vision
they want to stay fixed on the problem
so that's why when i ask them what's the next step
and then here's my check sheet
that makes it very quick
and i can do this is nytimes state at the semesters i want to
and um... you know it very very quickly give some feedback there you go for it
and i do a lot of here
uh... teaching and peer modeling
uh... this that the student has a limited is cheering you just don't like
me in his own you know it but i think
well have a requirement that benefit carpenter notebook relates to a little
notebook check in
pick out of a super nervous because she's doesn't think that she's you know
that you get as she ever worked for her portfolios the stick
so the guy with the one that's taken the gallup and again
they become at me i i set up by looking at the even the just that
on their portfolio
and then this dot
begins to see
ernest gallo whatever the the nazi era begins to show
feed visibly
what do you think she burst
are putting into the at into than to the what effort they're making
anything that i can do to make it visual for them
at next link
and this is that cover letter that i asked them to give me with each one of
their portfolios
or that or excuse me for their not further reading writing assignment
anytime in terms of the ncb they have to answer some or all of these questions
but never quite quickly answer very based on where we are in the turner
and what i've directly instructed them on
so then i decided to get all of these questions at one time but you know i
know you so much time with you so i gave you a whole convo
you know that
on it
these are those meta cognitive questions asked it is to really deal with her and
work
insead even you know talks about how to
when you get your teachers to be back
and this is what the logistics of your classroom
do you know
that review and revise process because the draft that they turn to you needs
more work
but if you're doing uh... large volume
uh... essays are paragraphs in one semester
how much time rebuilding interested is to pay attention to your feedback and go
back and evolve back piece of writing
into something that reflects
their best voids
yes the sometimes it's not volume
it's nice to see this dept and drilling dan
i think sometimes the reason we go with volume is because our students um...
knee-high interest equ case needs to be doing something different all the time
that that's cut sometimes as likes you know skin in this that is the top of the
water went
people really need to see how that revision process
you can really help their place
okay let's just go back to the slide you don't have to happen at the meeting us
what he says that you can see that this is called the big picture
you this is a big strategy in its
really and truly in in all honesty this is kinda like my solution not everybody
buys into this
this is what i have found works really well for me
in life on use this in training teachers them
quite frequently and a lot of people like it
to withdraw
they never take you hold in use it hold
the take pieces that in use pieces that
and the other thing about this is this took me probably about ten years to you
about involved
i didn't have all of this in place
day one
i had like create it
you know and now that we're going into the reading writing and going back into
it and saying okay
so how can we will be reinvent this
so the addresses the reading writing
um... pedagogy and it's working really well
it really
i mean we're already doing so much more advanced than we think we are
when you really kinda look at the concrete things that were doing
obtain price and now this is this is a guinea csc one teaching approach in this
really focuses in on reciprocal teaching
how do you marked on that
preview that you had
heard of reciprocal teaching before
and not surprised but if you click on that
uh... because when you're talking about unit uh... students who are not textbook
friendly you would say that i see is her
not really textbook family right
you can't have till i get them into the text but then
and activity then women's status you happier conflict that
where uh... they listen to the lecture
you know outside of class and they come in they do their homework in klamath
you know that kind of thing
also this is kind of like along that line filed this particular approaches
the group learning and i'll use this with text but i've introduced lessons
doing this
instead of saying to them at a major tax cut pages such as sex as a setting do
this homework and then bring it to me in that
trading in and i'm not trucks and that's the more stuff
and making a sign that
instead to introduce a lesson hypothermic groups of four and i had
they all have a text book of course
i get nervous a specific set of pages to deal with not too many first
and then i i have cards
that he's completely on each card for cards for each group
when the summer sistema riser
uh... uh...
questionnaire clarify ran predictor
so
what they did and he has uh... want they all read it i get a few minutes to read
it in the summarize there has to say out loud but the main point is
on that page
and then uh... the questioner
asked questions
and then declare fire answers that question
and then the predate their talks about the importance of it
students love this
and i would set aside no more than ten minutes
it's like a wonderful thing to get them doing what you're taking role
you know what you're getting your plants organized on a class business that you
have to do
and then up out of that oftentimes comes
uh... direction for instruction the clarification of what your status now in
what they need to know
so this is collaborative group working kind use it
four the textbook
this also has wonderful implications
in the reading writing classroom in terms of reader response
because if you can get in a really good peace
maybe let me go back to stephen king's my betrayed harmonies so that a
successful to them
they know about our movie thing that they've heard a stephen king
uh... unit they read pan if in gauging at high interest and then they do this
they have success
they feel successful
so getting them to do this with some kind interest
professional writers
is a great way for them
too and then you can even make it's like if you look at the questioner by
requiring predictor
you can't make it a directed learning activity where you say
he used cynical
you know so that you can even get and thinking about that
and why predicting
why do you think he didn't act
fro it doesn't have to be just
you meet there's all sorts of ways in which you can use that
okay the next the next ten now
it's like created all little template for the so that they could as a group
can individually every student has this
sometimes online might cast one of them to also double as a reporter
so one of them is running down the notes for the group in in the duplicated may
share it with everybody
but i want are really want you to one of them in this is arriving to learn
experience
this is reading and writing
when you have been doing this they are reading and writing
so what i'm asking them to do here is that each one of them make their own
record because kana statically i want you to them using their bodies to learn
you know and it's and it really keeps them focused on those forecasts that
they have to do
and again this is something by the end of the semester the students are so much
better at this and they are to begin a semester
i had a wonderful experience working in several cities came back to me
many semesters later and said you know that's how we run our her study groups
and vp anatomy
you know this is what we do know and i study groups but i remembered it from
uh... from your class
you know they they if they understand that they're learning something not just
for this class that they can help them in these other situations
a few of them will get back
unit at everybody but a few of them well
it's ok kinda go down a little bit too so that you can see
it's a place to summarize
which brings us to the next slide
all the research indicates
that one of the that's most effective teaching tools
if there is a sham
if you can summarize it and put it in your own words
you conduct
you know it
so summary is arr
really wonderful reading writing
strategy
but really teaching students
how to do a summary there so many different approaches
so this is one of products
uh... that has worked really well
you delete unnecessary material you can get
any state the topic senator or you create a topic sentence and then i get a
single paragraph
in the next page
and show them
i think aloud
with the comments this is what was eliminated this is what was condensed
and then finally in
with the summary
suggested is have a model had to do it and now
i will take a little bit of time
unifi if we're looking at uh... a six week semester
you're looking at work and where i work with less than an they can be just a
one-time lesson because repetition
is where they get that
you know they have to be able to do it more than one time
so uh... teaching them how summarize is a directive learning thinking activities
to reading writing activity and it will really increase their
uh... ability to meet at the marina comes as well
okay let's take a minute
while we're on this line
to look at
where
with this occur
in this letter cuz you know what this much artist for me
it's not just reading writing process for students to it now
doesn't mine
semester
this is one teaching them throughout the semester i don't know i would need to
begin with but i would really developing twenty staff
where would this i mean anything
rewriting
and free reading
it's a great way to pre re
i found that when we get this in the classroom with the tax plan
most students returned to the textbook on their and later
and this evident in their notebooks
you the different to be serious internet turn and so it's kind of light
you know wedding their at the time little
the premium reminding that that
because if you got your return response
have you can be made to be sure that they can really bailed in response to
what they've read
in a building need to know what the
author
not what they think
about what the artists that
you know what the times and there's some race before top s
they went right into a reader response instead of
summary authors i guess
that's a step they wanna skip
that they don't really want o
uh...
it through the house
okay next slide
at the end of this should be pretty familiar to many of you com
decay venue al
stands for
uh... why do why already know
what do i need
or wonder or what do i want to know i wonder about car will learn
india and on what did i mean we're
so i can't this is a reading writing strategy they can be used for the
textbook
it can also be used
fort ini peace of reading that you get down to a newspaper article
journal article
even up here
you know this is you you've got the whole thing is creating a respectful
audience
this is really asking them to put on a reading hack here they're gonna think
like a reader here
what do i need to know what do i want to know
what happened learned handily using their arrival to do it
that is a reading writing connection
to often in this before but don't let them southeast with this reform
and people think seem to think ballistic iceland appears to me
that it comes down to making every morning connection means that the studio
read something your response to something
facebook ultimate how combat we build up to but to get their their all sorts of
reading writing to learn activities
where we you we can we pick up riding and we can right without reading
when we do both we get bearing check
and sometimes we just have to read and say okay one of my getting out of this
reading and get after i read that
house is going to help me as a writer
as inappropriate reading and writing fiction
it's just going to
except that
floor construction how often do you want to do that
because every moment you mean you only have six weeks
in your remaining two times a week from here
you know so and remodel met with them
is so important
which is why i like this flow chart here
where am i going to build an like a w_l_
where might i ask them to stop and think about what they already know
you know they say was like this a felon
i'll ask them physical
called bill bennett
and on the citicorp agreement made all the pro-nazi that
but the cynical
it was the first time you ever heard that word
when this occurs near in your town like one of the first time you heard it
in any
third-grade
and how many times did you do you think network every year thereafter
you don't think so
i think a lot of them did
you know this this is being called deliberately not knowing
this is wonderful eh... little booklet that i read not to go on with uh...
several years ago by on jewish menace lasting this call doctor call kato h l
and if he talked about how he did we learn yiddish
and his family he defused warmly yet and she was a huge
you tension between him his parents
and it took a lot of work
that's learned usage
because they are spoken
and then when he grew up any begin to tell you this culture the great loss to
him
in a in he's the first one that i have ever heard say unions people choose
not to learn
and sometimes we have to confront them with that
this is not really hard to learn if you choose to learn it used here
is just whether or not you wanted to do you want to ring
going to make it
it's going to be on the test
with the fact that
but not only that
it's going to be in your life
it's gonna make a difference in your job incompetent
literate people
get more money
b_t_u_
they expressed themselves i mean sometimes they have to hear all this
from a so i think she's going to deliberately not no
you can see it in one of the
an attic into place have a conversation with them
okay next one
see you on that they have you've all seen this you've all had that's the
cornell team that's always a nine giving this to use because it took a lot of
time to make this
and i thought that i have to have to go through the pain of making that
because students don't do it too well on their own you know
my daughter had math problems because uh... honesty to this year's defeated us
down
because her handwriting with them and
and she would go did you know if she's doing addition
hewlett maker columns
fishy was never really and in the right on c
you noticed
hello equipment
just just just the way we interact with people sometimes they need to have not
vacant
created you know
imitation is the very
uh... basic level indiana and and bloom's taxonomy he has the effect that
domain the content to band-aid also has the psychomotor coming
in imitation is the foundation
usa we have to be in the tank we are not who aren't getting the curriculum
we're giving them a solid foundation dot that's all we have completed we are
that we are not asking them to do anything other than what is building
there
thereon
their literacy
okay that concept work now
and this is a reading skills
this is reading and writing impotent in that uh... i'm reading skilled i'm
bringing into the writing curriculum
and again if you just take this and let the past we're with this coming in
green-leaning
they've got a vocabulary preview
they can summarize anything
you know something like along the lines of that of a hundred words if they don't
know seven of them
they can understand it
seven at a hundred words and they do not have comprehension
non-invasive
so they have to be a new you really truly a lot of reading text books and
and minded as as well
i determined which words i think the students no i don't know when i make a
vocabulary best
in my classroom i make my students make that list
and what damage to self identified what words do you need to look out
and that also ask them to to begin thinking about what words are key
you know what words are important
you know so if i can make they'll do the work instead of me doing the work
that's what i'm looking for
so this is a wonderful previ ting this is also eight um...
uh... a really great pre writing
busing it you know what to do your response might say pick two or three
keywords
from this asst
well some um... i work concept map for each one of them and then to a free
right
veteran ideas but we should let you know what what this word to any kind of a day
to each other
you said that their looking at what the writer dealing with those words
we're looking up the working again to better understand about the word is in
their interacting with the work himself so that's not the whole response to the
entire reading assignment
it's just looking at the vocabulary
which tell you the truth as their greatest need
you know just looking at the candidate
okay the next one
and you know well this is up again this is a pre reading
this is that during reading
this is an active reading
this is a pre writing
this one chart
can be used in every one of those faces
and it's so wonderful for students to see that it can be we may try and take
stephen king's why we crave harmonies
and trying to put up k horror movies why we crave them now water all the
different recency guinness
they're beginning to see his depicting the cigar modeling the structure they're
reading for structure
and this is a ride on activity mrs read in everything
this is trying to learn
and then when they take this and they use it for their response
unite maybe that was like well why do you think people prakhar movies org
because something else that people really prayed you know like one week
three
you know you don't have to be about the harmonies that can be a model for a
different topic and then they use this
this concept now
and i know you already know all that
and then the review revised feedback blog
that's where the trainer comes in
uh... town
aggressive second parent
poor mum on crowd agreed greenwood industry is not clear what the attention
to it
was hours of my life
and you know i do like two different ways i do a trade grading where whenever
everything overwhelming binged
i tell of i'm linden that you've got
british film
hope what you think that what i want you to see matters
what kind of plan a every single thing and i possibly can
on this one piece of it you can see
we baseline where you started
and the interesting thing about this is that when they
put down run on
they'll say okay count up how many tines iro going on on your paper
who fifty two
one there
once deal
what iraqi fifty two
infractions
really prompt when they see that
class this is the way for them to
feeder
six weeks later they still having that many runaways will come on now take
responsibility
let's get the feeling here let's get some help me with what you might like
this
talked with this talent here who really knows about my masakela housing uses
them
you know that really bringing them back to their so this is this a grammar and
content
things that mining teachers are a little bit nervous about getting up
giving up is the grammar instruction and
this is how you doing
and then you have a handbook and you have my land
they had these infraction when they come up with this
this is their individualized out plant of course they take in the my land
or some kind of a diagnostic dream attached
but i don't know cuts coming out in their own writing
in there and protection
so that diagnostic test is not what i used to set their i mean that's it's one
of things that we talk about
for the things that we do
but it's this really right where i think this is what you're gonna have to study
and again i ask them to come up with the study plan
what are you gonna study first second third when you gonna do it
in what resources you can use
also allow him to give revisions based on this kind of work out completely and
totally replacements for if they felt mediated
improvement
yes
right
and it's important to warn them ahead of time like
this is the trade scoring the purpose of this is for you to have this information
and not on the essays repair effort you write this questioning get this death
you know he's you just did not want
activist three times
in the finance chair
uh... this real in-depth you can hear at all
at the beginning the middle and at the end
always
rely do more from president to do a lot of holistic scoring with the rubric
and then i also pointing out like if we had just talked about if any call in or
run on
housework outbreak that that you directed grading you know very focused
and directed grading
and that we can even really but i don't even know who they do then telling in
the classroom with that specific me
that with that group of students cuz
here modified class is very different than my six p in class
you know in the way they engage in the interactive even their level of comfort
with tax and weather
your values you know they're they're prior knowledge is
so i'm not exactly sure
until i get into the classroom
how i'm gonna allow this to you that's gotta be some fluid this as well within
the car
