Hi everyone, I'm Erik Hernandez-Oberding and I'm running as an independent candidate for
Vice President Internal of the UTMSU. Allow me to take this opportunity to tell you a
little bit about myself, my campaign and my goals. I'd like to start off by saying that
I believe the UTMSU has the potential to act as a source of student empowerment, however
if this is to occur there needs to be significant change in the way the organization is run
and the standards to which it is held. So I've been involved on campus for well over
a year now whether it's been as the BikeShare manager, with OUT@UTM our resident LGBTQ+
club, or the FoodBank helping to take stock and do inventory. As well as the many other
campaigns I've been a part of such as the Stop the Hikes, the Food Justice Assembly
and the Food Task Force. My involvement has always been undertaken with the goal of creating
a stronger more inclusive community on campus for all the students involved. This election
my campaign will focus on the lack of affordable, healthy food on campusas well as the lack
of permanent LGBTQ+ space. It will also look at the difficulties faced by food insecure
students in accesing the FoodBank and various solutions to this problem. I also hope to
foster a greater level of student involvement in the administrative system of governance,
enabling students to have their voices heard. As wellas into the UTMSU's very own system
of governance creating a student union much more in touch with the needs of the students.
This election is not about personal victories,it is not about internal politics or slates.
It is about creating a stronger more inclusive community on campus, and as such I hope all
those who get involved will continue to work with me to acheive these goals, regardless
of the election outcome.
