Romanian families living in Spain are not considering a definitive return to their country.
This is one of the conclusions of the thesis defended by Elena Ramona Bucur,
from the Interuniversity Institute for Local Development (IIDL),
in which the Universitat Jaume I takes part.
The economic crisis, especially in the building sector,
has had very negative consequences for Romanian workers.
In order to face this serious situation, the role of women, the intensive work,
the enterprising spirit and the search of new destination countries are being the key.
-People are thinking of going back to Romania for good some day, but in the long term.
[Elena Ramona Bucur. Researcher at IIDL.]
Above all, they are aged families, people approaching to retirement age
who want to spend their last years in Romania.
However, young people think about making a living and looking for job opportunities
both here in Spain and in other European countries.
They never say that they will go to Romania to look for a job.
They will go where they can get a job.
-The research analyses the religious, family and friendship networks
to explain the steady growth of the flows between Romania and Spain.
This growth has made that, in the province of Castelló,
10% of the population is of Romanian origin, a wide group that has integrated properly.
-The truth is that people is very happy because they have adapted well,
they feel welcome here in Castelló, they have had no adaptation problems,
they have learnt the language very fast, the customs are not so different...
Therefore, they have had no difficulties.
-The first thesis carried out under joint supervision by the Universitat Jaume I
and the Université d'Angers in France, wants to favour
the adoption of efficient measures in the field of migration.
-A conclusion that has attracted my attention through the time of research
is the construction of networks through the migratory strategies
and the development of these strategies, which should be taken into account
by some institutions or in migration policy issues
in order to valorise the migrants' relational capital
and put all these strategies into practice to improve their quality of life,
not to impose restrictions, because each legislative barrier
will boost the creation of a new survival strategy.
