What key messages UNESCO will bring to the 2011 World Economic Forum?
The first, probably, message is about education, is that education brings
sustainability to any development effort. Education is crucial for poverty
reduction. We all know that just one more year in
school for children can bring out of poverty 170 million people in the world,
or education for maternal health and child mortality, it's vital.
The second message is that it's important in our day's world to also have more
coordinated efforts on the part of the international community in terms of
development. We really have to strengthen the
multilateral system. And the way we move forward, I believe,
for the Davos Forum gives us exactly this opportunity.
And last, as I said, I believe it's to change the paradigm of development.
It's -- and especially in terms of crisis it's more than evident that there are so
many also ethical, moral issues that are in -- as a challenge in front of humanity.
And albeit we are more interconnected, we are not more secure and we are not more,
I would say, understanding each other and more tolerant towards each other.
I believe that the biggest challenge nowadays is how to manage diversity
and this is something that we don't have the recipes, but we can do it through
education, we can do it through more exchange, we can do it also through
searching for some core basic common values.
I call this new humanism but I do believe that nowadays in the world security,
peace, and development need a more human face.
