Hello everybody. My name is Erik Bryan, owner of Precision Air & Heating. There's been a
lot of talk within the heating and cooling industry about the impending phase-out of
R-22 and what it means to our customers. Information that is both factual and also misleading.
At Precision Air & Heating, we believe in providing our customers the most relative
information possible so that we can assist in helping our customers make educated decisions
about their heating and cooling system. So let's start with the basics. What is R-22?
Hydrochlorofluorocarbon is a colorless gas, better known as HCFC-22, or R-22. R-22 is
the main ingredient used in A/C units for over 4 decades. Unfortunately a bio hazard
product, when leaked into the atmosphere, is a noticeable depletion in the ozone layer.
You can find more detail on this by visiting the Montreal Protocol. So, in 1992, the EPA
began the phase out of this ingredient due to it's ozone depleting properties. The original
phase out of this mandate slated for a 90% reduction in R-22 consumption by the year
2015, and a 99.5% of near elimination of all R-22 production by 2020. However, the EPA
recognized that the industry was not on track to meet these mandates. So in January of 2012,
the EPA moved ahead its deadlines by decreasing the overall allowable production levels of
R-22 by an additional 45%. Hence, the cost of refrigerant is now nearly double what it
once was. At Precision Air & Heating we are not only in the business of serving our customers,
but also leading the way within our industry. So, here is what we are advising to be proactive
about this impactful situation. As a homeowner you have a few options. 1. attempting to maintain
your existing system as long as you possibly can. Obviously, preventative maintenance is
the number 1 thing as a homeowner that you can do. Everyone's familiar with Precision
Air's $159.95 tune-up. We are the only company in the valley that offers a true tune-up.
With over $600 worth of parts and services built-in up front. No gimmicks and absolutely
no tricks. Option 2. Most contractors will tell you that you need to upgrade to a new
higher efficiency non R-22 A/C unit. While option 2 will be the most recommended solution,
it can also be the most misleading. Let me help you understand. There are 2 types of
repairs when it comes to fixing an air conditioner. There are electrical repairs, and there are
mechanical repairs. Electrical repairs are obviously issues with your thermostat, a "Make a precision decision with Precision Air." contacter goes bad, a run cap goes out...mechanical
failures, failures that actually pertain to this specific situation, are failures where
we have to replace a compressor. Any type of repair that needs to be done where we have
to add or delete or put new refrigerant in. There is also a third option. Option where
the EPA has approved some refrigerant like Duponts ICodMO99, is being manufactured that
will run in older R-22 units. Most of this refrigerant will be at a higher price and
have a substandard performance to the R-22 refrigerant. Now, I must advise you that most
of these replacement refrigerants, including MO99 have not yet been approved by equipment
manufacturers. And if it's mixed with your current R-22 system is might, and quite possibly,
will void your manufacturer's warranty. If upgrading to a new unit is recommended, the
good news is that many of these newer units with manufacturer, utility and even contractor
rebates may actually cost less to purchase. Plus these new units are significantly more
efficient than the older R-22 systems. So, when you're ready to consider repair or replacement
of your old R-22 A/C unit, call Precision Air & Heating. All of our technicians are
certified and simply the best in the business. Our technicians will be able to provide the
most accurate diagnosis for your situation. Remember, when it comes to getting it done
right, it's all about precision. Call us today at 602FIXMYAC, or online at PrecisionAirAndHeating.com.
