Welcome to Saginaw Valley State University. Saginaw proudly has over 10,000 students with state of the art facilities.
SVSU has over 70 undergraduate programs and 11 graduate programs.
The student body is composed of individuals from the Mid Michigan region and from more than 50 countries across the globe.
Having a student to faculty ratio of24:1, SVSU students feel welcome and at home because they are a name and not just a number.
Coupling that with the lowest tuition of the 15 state universities,
SVSU is not only a welcoming choice, but a good financial decision.
Welcome to the SVSU orientation advising video created to make your orientation process a smoother transition to SVSU.
Welcome to Saginaw Valley State University, this is Groening Commons the crossroads to SVSU.
Today, we are going to give you information and tips on how to make the registration process as simple and stress-free as possible.
We'll be introducing you to current SVSU students who have already completed the process of first year registration at SVSU.
We will be taking you on a campus tour today that will include all the major stops in the process.
The first step in the process will be the primary degree components that will help you complete your degree in a timely manner at SVSU.
Those 5 components are: General Credit Requirements, Basic Skills Requirements, General Education Requirements,
Foundation/Pre-Requisite Courses, and Majors and Minors.
The next stop on our tour today will be Wickes Hall and the Office of the Registrar. Take it away Caleb.
Hello I'm Caleb and here we are on the first floor of Wickes Hall where you will find the office of the Registrar.
Even though you will register online through Cardinal direct, the Registrar's Office is the place to go for overloads,
late registration, and when you finally finish your degree (hallelujah chorus) you can pick up your official transcripts and diploma.
Today we are going to talk about the general degree and course requirements for your undergraduate degree.
Graduation requirements for Undergraduate degrees are based on the regulations and requirements
printed in the online course catalog in effect at the time of your initial registration at SVSU.
The time limitation on this provision is that no student may graduate under the
requirement of a course catalog published more than 6 calender years prior to the date
of graduation. In order to earn your bachelors degree, all students must complete the following requirements:
124 credits minimum for most degree programs, and keep in mind 42 of those credits must be at the 300/400 or junior senior level.
You must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, some professional or clinical courses require a higher GPA for admission.
All students must complete basic skills and general education requirements,
which we will cover later. Complete an approved major, and an approved minor but keep in mind, most majors require a minor,
but some programs have extensive pre-requisite or foundation cores that take place of a minor,
for example, the engineer and business programs. Thanks for visiting the Registrar.
Amanda where do they go next?
Well Caleb, the next step after Registration is the Basic skills requirements and Chad is going to help us out there,
and that is right across the hall here at first floor Wicks.
Hey Chad.
Hey Amanda, what's up?
Well, I have some future Cardinals that need some information about Academic Advising and Basic Skills Requirements.
Sure Amanda I can help.
I'll be back in a minute, you're in good hands.
Academic Advising is where you get the advising for the classes you need, where you get information about tutoring,
and when you finally get there, you get your audits for graduation (hallelujah chorus).
One of the most important components of this office and the most overlooked from students are the
Basic Skills requirements. As a liberal arts university, SVSU believes that to be successful
in college, students should complete courses in basic skills.
It is advised to complete these courses as quickly as possible as most of them are prerequisite courses that you'll need for your major.
First and foremost Initial placement or waiver of these courses is based upon ACT or placement testing results.
Courses numbered below the 100 level DO NOT get included in the students GPA.
However these courses are applied when determining
full time status for financial aid and for Freshmen athletic eligibility.
These Basic skills courses include the following:
Reading- English 082, 103, and/or 104
Writing Eng 080, 111 Math 081 or 082
Make sure you take every effort to complete these basic skills requirements NOW,
they're designed to help me to develop my necessary skills and I ignored them.
By not doing them , I missed my prerequisites for the courses I now need as an upperclassmen and now I'll have to drop out and go to Grand Valley!
She was a senior, she waited too long.
Chad!!!
Well, she waited too long!
They're that important!
Hey Amanda, maybe we should talk to one of our academic advisors.
Let me take you back to talk to Janna.
Okay, sounds good!
Ok, come on follow me!
Hi Janna 0:06:30.659,0:06:31.099 Hi Spencer
I have some friends here that need some information on what you do here as an academic advisor.
Well Spencer, essentially what an academic advisor dose is i'll take a student from their freshman orientation
all the way through their graduation process. It may just include telling a student what classes to take or
it could be helping them decide what major fits for a specific career path. So essentially Im there to guide you along in the process
I wont force you to take certain classes but I will give you all the information that you need to make a choice that fits you personally.
Sounds like a cool job. Is it true that as a liberal arts college that the General
Education requirements are there to make us more well rounded as not only students, but
as citizens of a culturally diverse world? 0:07:10.400,0:07:11.879 Well, as a student here myself, I'd
have to agree with that statement.
The whole idea of general education is to think for us, make logical choices, and to
communicate effectively outside of our major field.
Oh! Is it also true that any major
or minor requirements that you use for your degree can be used for your general education
requirements? For instance, if your major requires you to take Psych 100, you can also
use this to complete category 6 of the general education requirement?
Absolutely true. and don't
wait till you're a senior. it's not pretty.
Hey, don't forget that separate
from the Gen. Ed. requirements, are Foundation and Introductory courses.
These courses are from outside your discipline that helps form an essential base of knowledge within the curriculum.
For example, if you are a social work major, you need to have Psych, Sociology
and American Government Engineers have to have backgrounds in Physics, Chemistry and Calculus.
While Nursing Majors need to have Chemistry, Anatomy, and microbiology under their belts.
Some programs have introductory courses for all fields such as Comm. 105, or THEA 128A
That's right, but some classes have pre-requisites or require fieldwork.
These may not always be appropriate for freshmen! 0:08:15.990,0:08:18.550 Well, sounds like you have this covered,
if you have any questions, just make an appointment with an academic advisor.
Thanks Janna!
Well, how'd it go in there?
Good.
Did you cover the majors and minors?
That's okay Spencer. Why not head back to class?!
Well hopefully that explained a lot about your majors and minors?
Hey baby what's your major?
My major? Obviously YOUR major wasn't picking up chicks!
Don't hate the player, hate the game.
You mean the game that you have already lost.
Ahem Ben..
Oh hey
Majors? Minors?
A major refers to your primary field of study. A minor is a secondary area of study that complements your major.
Now keep in mind that most majors require a minor, but some programs require extensive
prerequisite or foundation courses that take the place of a minor.
Like engineering or business. What's your major?
Theatre. Not even in your wildest dreams.
