>>Theresa Bierer: As state law makers continue to make budgetary cuts working to balance
the budget; university officials are doing much of the same.
>> Bierer: At a recent campus forum, President John Haeger shared plans for the latest purposed
cut of 25.8million dollars. Bringing state support for Northern Arizona University to
25% of university revenue, that's down from 41% a decade ago.
>>President John Haeger: The state is beginning to pull back in terms of its support of public
education at all levels, Community college, k-12 and universities. That puts the burden
onůin a sense those who were using the services so that the students through tuition will
face additional increases. >>Bierer: At Northern Arizona University in
Flagstaff, and at the more than 30 extended campuses, enrollment is up. University administrators
are continuing to look for ways to reduce spending, while providing a quality education.
>>Michael Stevenson: We're having lots of conversations about how we can continue to
be very supportive of students success, continue to provide students with the kind of experiences
that they expect from NAU and doing that more effectively, more efficiently with fewer resources.
>>Bierer: Many faculty and staff are waiting to hear more about decisions from the state
and federal level which could further impact the budget. Finding ways to cut the budget
and do more with fewer resources will be ongoing.
