ITU has been working actively with partners from both government
and the private sector to encourage girls to consider a career
in the exciting field of information and communication technology
or ICTs. As a satellite engineer myself
I know how rewarding this field can be but since
I did my own training the world of ICT has expanded exponentially
technologies is now an essential part of just
about every other field a human activity. that means that today's girls
can choose to pursue hybrid degrees that combine
ICT studies that combine a whole range of complementary fields
like biology medicine climate science
mathematics or environmental management
Girls with an ICT degree can expect to
earn salaries similar to those of doctors lawyers
and airline pilots. What's more is that ICT degrees
are highly transportable, meaning that
unlike some other disciplines they can choose to work just about
anywhere in the world. I am delighted to serve
as a patron of the new African
Digital Woman of the Year Award, and congratulated the
organizers for their effort to raise awareness among
Africa's governments educators and girls
themselves of to tremendous opportunities
an ICT carrier can offer. I encourage Africa's girls and young women to take
inspiration from the pioneering digital women
that this new award will recognize, and I look forward to personally
congratulating the winner
when she's named at the gala ceremony in Youndé
on 16 November.
