Oscar Pistorius left the Pretoria Magistrates Court after the first day of his bail hearing
on Tuesday.
The paralympic athlete is charged with the *** of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his
home on February 14th.
Earlier in the day, Pistorius told a packed courtroom that he shot his girlfriend by mistake,
thinking she was an intruder.
The prosecutor called it premeditated ***.
Double amputee Pistorius issued an affidavit which was read by his lawyer claiming that
he felt vulnerable because he did not have his prosthetic legs on when he shot through
the bathroom door.
It was then that Pistorius said in the sworn statement that he realised that model Reeva
Steenkamp was not in his bed.
He put on his prosthetic legs, tried to kick down the locked door, then bashed it in with
a cricket bat to find Steenkamp inside the bathroom.
Pistorius said he ran downstairs with her, but "She died in his arms."
Prosecutor Gerrie Nel charged the 26-year-old athlete and Olympian with premeditated ***,
alleging he took the time to put on his legs and walk some seven meters (yards) from the
bed to the bathroom door before opening fire.
A conviction of premeditated *** carries a mandatory sentence of life in jail.
The bail hearing will resume on Wednesday morning.
