There are several ways that Photoshop can convert a color photograph to a black and white image.
One way is to click the Image menu, point to Mode, and select Grayscale.
Another alternative is to click the Image menu, point to Adjustments, and select Desaturate.
While quick and easy, these methods produce a very flat and lackluster image.
The following steps reveal how to do the job while maintaining tonal integrity and great contrast.
In Photoshop go ahead and open data file convert_tw.psd
After you have done so, locate and double-click on the Adjustments panel.
Within the Adjustments panel click on the Black and White icon.
The Adjustments panel displays the Black and White settings
and a new Black and White adjustment layer is added to the Layers panel.
Now, in the Adjustments panel click on the Auto button.
For an instant duotone effect select the Tint check box.
Now, to change the tone you can click on the Color Swatch next to the Tint check box.
Here you can use the vertical Color Slider and the Hue box to select a different tint color.
For show, on the vertical Color Slider I’m going to choose a magenta type range of color.
And then select something more lavender in terms of its hue.
If you’re satisfied with the color that you have selected go ahead and click on the OK button.
You can always turn the tint off by clicking on the check box next to Tint and just keep it black and white.
You can also adjust other tonalities by using the other sliders located in the Adjustments panel
under the Black and White settings.
