American flag etiquette and the rules concerning a proper display and care of our nation's
flag is something that every American should become thoroughly familiar with. Hi, I'm Captain
Joe Bruni, with over three decades of fire fighting, honor guard, and EMS experience.
Our nation's flag, referred to as "Old Glory" is looked upon as a living thing. When our
nation's flag becomes tattered and dirty it should be thoroughly cleaned to be ready for
display again. If it becomes frayed or tattered on the edges, it should be thoroughly mended
before flown again in the upright position. When the American flag cannot be mended or
cleaned properly it should be disposed of in the proper way. Disposal of the American
flag is sometimes cared for by burning the American flag in a ceremonial type of display.
Our veterans organizations and Boy Scouts organizations many times have provisions to
properly dispose of a worn and tattered American flag that is no longer suitable for display.
I'm Captain Joe Bruni. Stay safe. See ya' again some time.
