Only 9% of our nation's energy comes from renewable resources.
And as fossil fuels become scarcer,
we need to look for new ways to become more sustainable.
Verizon is so committed to sustainability
because it's the right thing to do.
For our customers, for our employees,
for the communities where we live and work.
One of the examples I think about when I think about
partnering for sustainable solutions is Big Belly Solar.
Big Belly Solar uses new technology
to solve an old problem.
It's a solar powered wireless public trash can that
recycles waste, compacts trash
and notifies you when it's full.
Working with the Verizon Innovation Center,
we were able to streamline the development of our product
and bring it to market much faster.
We provide them our engineering expertise,
our lab facilities,
our tools and technology
to integrate Verizon's cellular into
the Big Belly smart recycling solution.
(Jim) Big Belly Solar uses M2M data
to take garbage trucks off the road.
And I say to people all the time,
the most efficient garbage truck
is the one that you don't have to drive.
Right here on our campus, we've actually implemented
Big Belly Solar and it's given us the ability
to reduce our waste collection by over 70 percent.
(Jim) Already tens of thousands of machines
are being used across the country
to reduce carbon emissions and save operating costs.
Advanced technologies from Verizon are playing
an invaluable role in helping communities to
reach their goal of a greener, more sustainable future.
Because the world's biggest challenges
deserve even bigger solutions.
Powerful answers.
Verizon.
