Mencap's work service is called Employ Me.
It is a specialist programme that supports people with a learning disability
to gain work experience and a paid job.
Mencap also supports companies and organisations to
employ people with a learning disability.
My name is Matthew Fowler. I'm 22.
I live in Allington in Derby.
I went to a Mencap job club, which I was advised to by the Job Centre.
I then met a job coach called Craig, he helped me look for work.
At the job club where I met Craig we also did workshops
on how to apply for jobs and how to fill in forms and interview skills.
It really built my confidence and really motivated me into finding work
and looking for work.
Being able to work now has really changed my life, it's really given
me a lot of focus, a lot of positive determination to really do things
and really overcome certain barriers in terms of anxiety and confidence
and things. I really feel a sense of self-belief and a sense of pride,
and a lot of people who know me have also said the same.
My name is Danielle Brannon and I'm a sales assistant at The Range,
in Rotherham where I help customers. I got the job at the Range because
Sue Straw helped me from Mencap. I met Mencap via my disability advisor
at the Job Centre and they got me into Mencap. I have been working at
The Range for nearly a year. If I didn't get help off Mencap
I probably wouldn't have got this job. I like the job, because I get the help
I need, if I'm stuck on something they will help me.
And l just love my job with everything.
My name is Robert John Pratley.
I work at the Learning Disability Team in Oxford - Cowley.
I have met loads of friends.
I do scanning, design posters, filing and laminating.
Everyone is really kind and friendly.
I'm Sheila, and I'm Rob's Mum
Mencap have been involved with our family, since Robert was about
twenty years old, when he was just finishing his last year in college.
And they have been supporting us ever since, trying to find work for Rob.
His self-confidence has really boomed. He can discuss things a lot more,
he has got more of a say on things now. Not just sitting in the background
and saying nothing, because he has had that support at work
and a lot more peers around him, he's got the chance to have his say,
which has been absolutely fabulous.
Mencap offers personal services for people with a learning disability,
as well as their families and carers, to lead the lives they choose.
