I was so moved by Urmi's courage, her commitment, her passion, for
these girls, uh, so different from her, and also by the success that she had, raising
them, giving them education, and um, and even as society frowned on her and her work, even
as it cost her a marriage, and so I wanted to tell that story in Half the Sky, to show
that, yes, terrible things are going on, but, it's not, you go to Kalighat and it's
not just depressing, you see terrible things that break your heart but you're also are
incredibly inspired by people like Urmi who show monumental courage, resilience, and achievement.
And I guess that's something that people don't always understand, they think that,
this is a world that is just depressing. There is that, but, the Urmis out there ultimately,
um, make it kind of inspiring. Side by side with the worst of humanity, you see the very
best, and that's Urmi.
