Hi everyone! So today I'm going to talk about the difference between immigrant and refugee.
According to the UNHCR, there is approximatively 60 million people forcibly displaced in the world.
Boat crossings of the Mediterranean make the headlines almost daily
and it is becoming increasingly common to see the terms "refugee" and "migrant" or "immigrant" being used interchangeably in the media.
However, they have different meanings.
IMMIGRANTS are individuals who leave their country to settle in another.
They choose to move not because of a direct threat of persecution or death, but mainly to improve their lives by finding work, or in some cases for education, family reunion, or other reasons.
And, they still have a choice to return to their own country at any time.
As for REFUGEES, they are defined as persons, who move out of one's country due to restriction or danger to their lives.
They usually flee armed conflict or persecution.
Their situation is often so perilous that they cross national borders to seek safety in nearby countries,
and they are so recognized precisely because it is too dangerous for them to return home.
Another difference is the legal status of "immigrant" and "refugee".
An immigrant can move to a country after due Government or embassy paperwork and is under the laws of that country.
A refugee is defined and protected in international law
and is entitled to basic protections under the 1951 Convention.
Before resettlement refugees stay in camps where they are provided basic accommodation
till they can relocate in a third country or until they can find a better place.
Refugee camps are set up to provide aid to these individuals till they can return to their country.
In the event that they cannot return to their country,
resettlement options are provided in a third country.
A total of 17 Countries like Australia, Canada, Denmark, Chile and others have refugee quotas and provide resettlement options in their countries to individuals from refugee camps.
As for immigrants, they move out of their own volition,
it means that they have to explore themselves for their own settlement (accommodation) in the new country.
There is a question that comes over and over in the media as to know
if illegal migrants and refugees are treated differently.
Basically, countries are free to deport people who arrived in the country without legal papers,
which they cannot do with refugees.
Finally, who are the people reaching Europe now?
According to the United Nations refugee agency, most of them are refugees.
That's all for this video
I hope you find it useful, if YES don't forget to give it a thumbs up!
I hope that now is clear that there is a difference between refugee and immigrant.
Be curious, Be open minded, Be respectful and Be happy
