Today's tutorial will be covering mixing kicks.
Just so we're clear, i'm not suggesting that this is the only correct way to mix kicks.
I'm just giving insight on the methods I use.
First thing's first. Adjust the levels (volume) of your sounds in the mixer.
Leave the drums (kicks, snare, claps, etc) at a higher volume than your other instruments. This increases their presence in the track even more.
Now select your mixer track for the kick and open the parametric eq 2 plugin.
Cut off just a small portion of the low end and raise the "low mid" up just a little in the 250-300 hz area. Remove some of the high end as well, if it's present within the kick.
Since there's a secondary kick, we'll need to mix that as well in order to accompany the main kick.
So again, select the secondary kick in the mixer and open the parametric eq 2 plugin.
This kick has more low end to it, which is ideal for this type of track. All that needs to be done here is to lower the "low mids" just a little in the 250-300 hz section.
You can lower some of the low end bass a little if you want to. Make sure to lower the high end also if it is present in the kick.
Notice the difference?
Here's one more trick that is sure to give your kicks more of that extra thump everyone is looking for.
If you have the waves bundle then you more than likely should have this useful plugin.
Open the "Waves Transx Wide Mono" plugin on your main kick mixer track. Once you have it open, adjust the settings to fit your desired sound.
As you should be able to tell, the kick now has more of a punch to it.

Off
Simple and easy.
