Hello, I am Felipe Garay
and I am Patricio Jara and we are classmates
in the University of Santiago, Chile
There is a NASA web page
that allows to receive mail notifications
informing when the ISS will be visible where you are
but it lacks of social features
Here NASA loses an important communication channel
that could be used to get to those users that are not informed about the spacial exploration.
Our application is destinated mainly to two kind of users
those that download the application and know about the space program
and those who don't know about the space program but that can be informed by state updates in the social networks
We created an android app
that allow the user to add future pass of the ISS to the phone's calendar
using the android's native interface that is know to the user
this allow to sync the event with Google's services.
also the user can report if he can see the ISS
If the user send a report, then his status on Facebook will be updated
and other users of the app will see an eye in the map at the position of the reports of the last 3 hours
There is also a icon in the map
that show if the user can or can not see the ISS
based on the current weather.
We created this app using APIs like open-notify
to get future spots of the ISS
openweathermaps to get the weather
and Facebook's Graph to update user's status
In the future, we plan to add support to other space's objects
not only satellites, also planets and stars
and send alerts when is the best moment so see them.
At long term we want to create a social network
where people can share experiences and tips about the sighting of satellites
and create local communities to see the objects that surround our planet
