JIngle Bells was written by James Lord Pierpont around 1850 . It was originally titled 'One
Horse Open Sleigh'. It was actually meant to be sung on Thanksgiving. A plaque in Medford,
Massachusetts states that James Pierpont wrote Jingle Bells there around 1850 at the Simpson
Tavern. Legend has composed the song there using there Piano. Salem Street races from
Medford to Malden Center inspired him to write the song. There is actually a bit of controversy
as to whether he wrote the song in Medford, Massachusetts or Savannah, Georgia as he worked
at a Unitarian church as a music director. However, James Pierpont was from the Boston
area. The song was copyrighted as 'One Horse Open Sleigh' in 1857. It was then revised
in 1859 as 'Jingle Bells, or the One Horse Open Sleigh'. Bells were used on horses harnesses
as a way to avoid collisions at intersections as horse drawn carriages in the snow were
very quiet. The bells in the song Jingle Bells actually mimic the rythmic sound the bells
would make as the horses trotted along. Well guys that's all the information I have on
this topic.
