LYNNE: Strategy #3 is all about following through on your ideas. That's it. I showed
you that iceberg -- there it is. So that iceberg, there are all those ideas that you've been
suppressing for so long. Just let them come up, and follow through. Consistently and persistently,
like priming the pump. The harder it gets, the more you have to do it. It doesn't take
too many more pumps after that that the water starts flowing, and then it's simple. There
is resistance. If anybody's pumped water, there's still resistance. It's not like that
floppy pump that hasn't been primed yet. There's still resistance when the water's flowing,
but it's simple. It's not that struggle to get it down. That's the persistent, consistent
action to be taken.
Okay, on page 1 of 8 here, I say we all have great ideas from time to time, and some are
better than others. Remember the decision-making process?
SPEAKER 2: Just do it?
LYNNE: (laughs) Yeah, that's my advice, is JFDI, just frigging do it. But there's a system,
step by step by step. Does anybody remember? Okay, so the idea comes to you. Then you consider
the idea. Where does this idea come from?
SPEAKER 2: Super-conscious?
LYNNE: Super-conscious. This idea comes to you from the super-conscious mind. Because
if it's coming from the sub-conscious mind, it's a limiting piece of advice. "Oh God,
don't do that. What will the neighbors think? Oh, if you do that, you're going to get hurt.
If you go near the edge of that cliff, you're going to fall off." So that might be good
advice, but are you going to go that close to the edge of the cliff, at our age? I mean,
we know enough about getting too close to the edge of the cliff. We can go closer.
We consider the idea that comes from the super-conscious mind, because it's a positive idea. To consider
it. What are we asking ourselves?
SPEAKER 1: Do we want it?
LYNNE: "Is this something I want? Is this something I want to do, have, or someone I
want to be?" So then I say decide. What's the decision?
SPEAKER 3: Yes or no.
LYNNE: That's it. It's just answering that question, right? This is the question, and
your decision is simply answering that question. That's all it is. It's not "Well, if this
were to happen" or "Well yeah, but not right now. If it were to happen later..." No ifs.
Because if it's an "if," it's no. Is this something I want? Nope. Is this something
I want to do? Well, not right now. Take those words, "not right now." Just no. I don't want
you to get hung up and then you're lost for a long time before you make a decision. Just
make a decision. Is this something you want to do? If you're saying "not right now," then
the answer is no. Simple as that.
And then act. That's when I talk about take that first step. So you're here, you've made
the decision, "yes" -- just take that first step, whatever it is. It could be sending
me an email, giving me a call, saying "Lynne, I just had this fabulous idea and I've made
a decision that yes, I'm stepping in to." Great. That first step is launched out there,
you told me about it. Now I'm going to hold you accountable. Because from the time you
call me or email me until I get back to you -- which could be in one hour -- you can have
your gremlin coming up from down in the basement and saying "Are you crazy? Stop! You're going
to die!"
That's why you need to take that step immediately. Immediately, right when you make the decision.
Because the time between the decision and the action to hold yourself accountable, in
this time, your sub-conscious mind has woken up, and it's that gremlin or that demon, or
in French it's a "little devil," whatever -- you've woken it up, because you started
thinking. And when you start thinking, it wakes this up and it comes up with that toxic
paint of all the memories. Remember what your memories are: feelings.
So this is what Strategy 3 is all about. It's about getting support, holding yourself accountable.
How do you hold yourself accountable? Through your support system. Through your employees.
You dare to share your vision with them. "This is where I'm taking the company. Do you want
to come with me?" And they're saying, "What's in it for me?" So tell them what's in it for
them, and then follow through on it.
Because this is what happens with a lot of companies, is they make promises and they
really intend to get there, but then they stop pumping when it gets hard, and all the
water goes back down and they say "No, but we just didn't get there yet. We're going
to give you those bonuses, but we're just not there yet." So then these people say "Forget
it. This is taking way too long." It's all about continuing to pump the pump. And when
you're not there pumping the handle, then you got to have somebody come in and pump
the handle for you. You have somebody else come in, but keep that handle pumping, so
that you've got a constant, steady flow of water coming out of that pump. Gosh, I love
this analogy. It's beautiful. It's beautiful.
