Hello, everyone, so I saw this image right here of Google search autofill results for
why does [insert US state here], so I thought I’d answer them. Well, at least the first
25 because 50 is actually not a small number of states.
[Intro] 1: Why does Alabama have a 28 on their helmets?
It was in honor of Altee Tenpenny, who died in 2015 at the age of 20 in a car accident.
The 28 was from the number on his uniform. He played for Alabama, obviously.
2: Why does Alaska have so many earthquakes? Because it’s just north of the edges of
the Pacific and North American plates, also explains why they’re in southern Alaska.
3: Why does Arizona not observe DST? Because in the summer, temperatures can get
hot and miserable by Dubai standards, so if you suggest to an Arizonan the idea of more
sunlight in the evening, they’ll probably get mad at you.
4: Why does Arkansas have the highest obesity rate?
It’s actually rising in and around the entire area (sorry, couldn’t find a good answer).
5: Why does California have the most seats in the house?
It’s because the seats each state gets is determined by their population, California
gets 55 because it’s more populous than Canada!
6: Why do Coloradans hate Californians? It was hard to get a good source for this,
but the whole “I’m only living here because it’s close to California” stuff probably
won’t help. Coloradans are also known for disliking Texans, and us Oregonians are also
known for disliking Californians (and Washingtonians). Good thing I’m from the other Washington!
7: Why does Connecticut have a silent C? And yes, Connecticut has a silent C. Anyways,
it was originally pronounced (and to some still is) as “Connect-icut”, but try saying
that 5 times quickly while preserving the K sound in there. It’s a mouthful!
8: Why does Delaware exist? It doesn’t…
9: Why does Florida suck? Everyone here in the US basically loves to hate Florida. The hot and
humid weather, mosquitoes, thunderstorms, they get warm weather while the rest of us
(including California) have to wear space suits to go outside, hurricanes. BuzzFeed
made an article about it.
10: Why does Georgia have so many countries? There’s a country in the Caucasus mountains
named Georgia (different George), but I’m assuming you meant counties. Georgia has 159
counties, and TL;DR, I linked an article in the description.
11: Why does Hawaii have volcanoes? Hawaii is a small island chain in the Pacific
Ocean, and if there were no volcanoes, Hawaii basically wouldn’t exist.
12: Why does Idaho grow potatoes? It’s been said that Idaho is perfect for
growing potatoes, and that’s mainly due to their fertile, volcanic soil.
13: Why does Illinois have earthquakes? Places away from the edges of their respective
plates can have earthquakes because fault lines can actually form in the middle of a
plate, like the New Madrid Seismic Zone.
14: Why does Indiana have a shortage of teachers? Nationwide, fewer teachers are applying, possibly
due to the fact that teachers are being paid less.
15: Why does Iowa vote first? Really, it was because of scheduling issues.
The time that would work for them just happened to be before the times of other states.
16: Why does Kansas have so many tornadoes? Tornado alley is perfect for creating tornadoes.
17: Why does Kentucky have two time zones? Lots of states do, actually, including my
home state. Time zones aren’t set with state boundaries, which would make states like Alaska
look like China.
18: Why does Louisiana speak French? In the end of the 18th century, the French
settled an area of land encompassing the Louisiana area, around New Orleans, to Montana, and
a little bit of Alberta and Saskatchewan. This land was purchased by the US in 1804.
19: Why does Maine split electoral votes? Nebraska does the same thing. See, candidates
in the general elections get basically all or nothing in electoral votes. In Nebraska
and Maine, it’s all split by districts. In 2008, Omaha voted for Obama, while the
rest of Nebraska voted McCain. Basically, people in 1968 were afraid that under their
three-party system, candidates would win with 34% of the vote.
20: Why does Maryland hate O’Malley? Okay, as a Marylander, I… feel guilty for
not knowing this off the bat. Well, many reasons, for one, MD had the second highest foreclosure
rating in the US in his last year in office, 2014. There were also tax raises, pink slips,
foreclosures, and people complained that the state government simply didn’t work under
him.
21: Why does Massachusetts have the best schools? Probably because Massachusetts is so damn
hard to spell?
22: Why does Michigan have the UP. Michigan and Ohio had a dispute over the Toledo
strip, which Ohio won, hence Toledo, OH, and Michigan was given the UP as a compromise.
23: Why does Minnesota vote democratic? It’s hard to tell, really, how states end
up blue, red or purple, especially considering how much paint that would require. Cities
tend to vote democratic, and Quora has a possible explanation. I don’t, because I’ve never
been there.
24: Why does Mississippi have a confederate flag [on its flag]?
The first state to try to secede from the Union in the civil war was actually Mississippi,
and a LOT of southern states have flag designs at least partially inspired by the confederate
battle flag.
25: Why does Missouri have two NFL teams? The last one in part 1 of this list. Couldn’t
really find good sources as to why Vat19’s home state has 2 NFL teams, though it may
be because its two biggest cities, St. Louis and Kansas City, straddle the borders between
Illinois and Kansas, respectively.
