Hello, my name is John Armitt I'm the Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority and welcome
to this fly-through of the Olympic Park.
The construction of the Olympic Park is regenerating a large part of east London, the size of the
City of London. As well as creating world-class sports venues, there will be new utilities,
infrastructure, transport links and homes that will serve future communities, long after
2012.
We begin at the Olympic Stadium, which is in the south of the park, and is surrounded
by water on three sides, giving it the feel of an island. Construction of the 80,000 seat
venue began in May and the lower structure, for the south and west stand, is already clearly
visible. The Aquatics Centre, now below us will include two 50-metre swimming pools,
as well as a diving pool. After the Games, the Centre will provide new community and
elite swimming and diving facilities London currently just doesn't have.
Sitting right in the middle of the Park is the new Stratford City regeneration development,
a major new shopping and leisure complex, with Stratford International Station alongside.
During the Games, Javelin trains will arrive every ten minutes, bringing thousands of spectators
to the Park each day.
The Olympic Village is to the north of the International Station. Construction work here
is also underway and the Village will provide a convenient base for athletes during the
Games. After 2012, the Village will become the hub of the new community living around
the Olympic Park.
The VeloPark is also located in the north of the Park, and will include a 6,000 seat
Velodrome and a BMX circuit. The Beijing Games showed we're the best in the world at cycling
and this venue will provide lasting world-class cycling facilities for the community, including
a new road-cycle circuit and mountain bike course.
So that's just some of what we're building, and just under four years out, this fly-through
shows how the area is now changing rapidly. Seventy-five pence out of every pound we spend
is going towards making lasting changes, creating a legacy of improvements that will benefit
everyone, well beyond the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
