welcome to "county report
this week."
the time has come for the
redevelopment of the wheaton
which envisions the future of a
walkable community.
To get the feeling of the
upcoming changes in that part of
town, county executive eid
leggett lead a walking tour of
the wheaton area.
>> the county detective lead a
walking tour of wheat and and
the county has officially issued
a request for proposal to select
a developer that will transform
downtown into walkable
community.
>> I want a mixed use
development in the wheaton and I
also wanted to be walking
community, a community where the
community is very much involved
with what happens.
If we cannot get that
involvement, we cannot get that
participation, we will be having
new buildings without community
input or committed involvement,
it would not be successful.
>> the long-awaited
redevelopment will construed --
will include construction of the
maryland national park and
planning commission and mixed
use development and a town
square.
At the forefront, providing
accessible transportation two
future presidents.
>> one of the key is we look at
what we think about this
is
transportation.
We are right on top of the metro
and many busy bus lines and
potential future bus rapid
transit lines.
When families to not have to own
two cars or any car at all, it
cuts down and our transportation
costs by a lot.
>> wheaton is a place where many
people have called at home
because it is a portable.
We have that element and I don'
t
believe that will be altered in
any way.
I see an opportunity to bring,
perhaps, some additional
housing, not on a large scale,
that will speak to perhaps the
young professional or maybe a
couple who is ready to downsize
and want to live near a metro.
The county already has a
specific percentages for
affordable housing but I think
the focus really is on the
amenities and it is to create a
destination spot.
>> assistance will be provided
to businesses in the area to
guarantee they can continue
daily operations while awaiting
the improvements.
>> council member navarro put
together a bill that is going to
help the small businesses with
what is called a small impact
assistance fund.
That is to help them offset some
of the costs they would have
been losing some revenue,
potentially.
We don'
t know what that will be.
>> the town
of clarksburg is
montgomery county'
s last master
plan development along the I-270
corridor.
The evolution of this community
has had its share of
disappointments.
As susan kennedy reports, the
future of clarksburg is looking
much brighter.
>> for several years
, this was
the only strip of retail that
existed in clarksburg.
Now, thanks to the work of some
residents and county council
member craig reiss, that is
changing.
>> we know it is really an
exciting to see some of the new
developments coming up
throughout clarksburg.
There is a residential
development but it is exciting
to see what is happening on the
commercial and retail site.
I am standing in front of them
against in clarksburg that
opened a few short months ago.
-- bennigan'
s.
It is a great progression to see
that we are having a new and
exciting things coming here.
It is just really a sign of more
things to come.
>> a. Harris teeter grocery
store is under construction in
clarksburg village.
The retail center is located off
snowden parkway will also house
several other small retailers.
The second grocery store is also
planned for the carper town
center site which is still in
the design stage.
The new model for the center
will include retail,
residential, and government
buildings.
>> the only challenge is that it
is not exactly what the
community signed off on some
years ago so it will require
working with the community to
make sure there is a buy in
about this new vision.
>> right now, the planning board
is working to resolve issues
surrounding future developments
near the 10-mile creek
watershed.
Development in clarksburg has
occurred through a staging plan
that balances development with
infrastructure.
That plan called for
environmental monitoring in the
watershed before allowing
development to proceed.
>> the environmental aspect is
firmly planted and rigid here in
clarksburg but we want to make
sure that continues.
At the same time, we have to
foster development and make sure
we are supporting the
development that has been
approved through our master
plan.
A think the key for us is to
achieve that balance, working
with the planning board, working
with the community, and
developers to come up with a
plan that represents protecting
our environment but also
delivering on the expectations
are clarksburg residents had
been they decided to move here.
>> as are scheduled to deliver
their recommendations on 10-mile
creek sometime this fall.
>>
there is a problem that is
helping qualifying working
families who falling oil income
tax returns to make ends meet in
montgomery county.
>> almost
$1 million were added
to the working family income
supplement for the -- for the
2014 fiscal year.
Three council members tell us
more about it.
>> the working families'
income
supplement is one of the most
effective ways to address
property at a minimal cost to
the government.
It is reducing the tax burden
for the working poor so they can
use that money for car payments
or rent or food or whatever it
is they are having trouble with
at that time.
>> you'
ve got the poorest people
in your community out there
working and not saying much
improvement in income and their
costs are going up.
We still have inflation, we
still have the issue of the
rising rents.
It becomes harder and harder for
those people to stay here.
>> to qualify for the earned
income tax credit, you need to
check the maximum amount of
income allowed for your case.
This varies depending on the
number of qualifying and if you
are filing jointly or have
children.
>> we estimate 36,000 working
people will benefit from this
program.
>> working family income
supplements helps low income
people that make below $50,000.
It is to be able to get
them
income credits for low income
people.

hundreds who honored the

This is the vice President Of
the darcars group.
>> small business is important
here in the county.

registered and they are equally
if not more important than the
large corporations that May set
up headquarters here that from
the local chocolatier to
innovations in health care, the

business ownership is to the
economy of montgomery county.
>> eric reed
and his wife one

2.5 years but this has been in
the making for the last 10
years.

God and basically he called us.
