I'm here painting a bookshelf with these rectangular modules
or niches, if you want to call it that way
look how nice is it. MDF
with these modules I can do the shelf that I want
could be piled up or like a ladder
Do you know why? Because the interesting thing is that they got back here this support I can screw on the wall
so my bookshelf is tight and I can separate the modules
or stack the way I see fitting and according to the space I have at home
So, these modules I painted with Tinta Laca Daiara (Lacquer Paint Daiara),
one that's water based!
And that's waht I want to teach you today!
I already started to prepare the surface
Other day a friend of mine was telling me
that started by himself to pait an old furniture
He told me that sanded the closet
an old imbuia closet
and have made it very well
but of couse there's always some spot
always remains a little in the wood
and then he started to paint with PVA Branco Daiara (White PVA Paint Daiara)
and he made about 5 layers
but at the end it had yellowed..
That, folks, is the lack of sealer.
I told him, look you forgot the sealing
then he answered: But the paint doesn't cover everything?
Doesn't matter all the layers I've made?
I said: Look is not resinous as a sealer.
that product makes a film
look, whatever if it's mdf or wood.
I say it because MDF are milled pine chips
with resin powder added by high compress.
And there's a lot of MDF qualities, first quality
second quality, and even that one tha loks like a cardboard
and if you are used to paint, you know that!
First quality is super resinated
so it's more expensive, the product costs more
You will find a lot of types
You will find a lot of types
and pay attention to the mdf quality you're buying
And if you find a low quality niche, but you loved it?
one that you touch and feel the texture..
What can you do? Use Sealer!
you will seal the surface before start painting
You don't want to do like my friend that spent 10 paint layers
You don't want to do like my friend that spent 10 paint layers
and still has a yellowed furniture. right?
You are going to sand it first, apply sealer, and then you are ready to star painting. Is always like this!
I get a lot of emails and people ask me for directions to reform furnitures
I always say, first clean up very well the surface!
Here is easy, because it's new!
If I had to reform something with original paint
the first thing I would do is to remove it all
epending of the furnite.. straight and smooth, it's easy! ok!
But that old furniture with a lot of details
You can't sand it! There's no way!
Neither by hand you get it.
So you use a varnish remover
You find it at furniture paint stores.
Usually, old furnitures have varnish, old wax, than you have to remove it all.
How do you do? Follow the package directions
Each product has its instructions, follow them correctly.
use mitts, work with steel spatula, that wide. Work with burlap too.
So you will remove everything that could give you bad results
Follow packege instructions. It's important!
After that, wait until the next day, to evaporate residue, and then you'are free seal.
I have two sealers, both are Daiara Products.
The Selador para Artesanato Daiara (Handicraft base Daiara), has white backgroud, which I had applied here.
and the Base para Madeira, also a sealer but colorless
Because if I'm going to paint it white, ok, I need a white background
but if I'm going to paint it black, with Black Lacquer Paint, has no sense make it white to turn black.
So I use the colorless sealer!
All the sealers are water based, with resistant acrylic resins
But I recomend you to wait at least 24h to paint over, right?
Because resin needs time to seal and make a film.
After that, sand a little to take off excess.
now, over this film I paint, and my surface will be protected
the surface will not blow yellow spots and even will absorb paint exceedingly
MDF colours the paint with his natural pigment
It's easy! I'm here to make it easy for you!
to apply the sealer I'll need a brush and a paint roller.
This brush has longer bristles, making your work easier!
So, the first step is to apply like this..
Look: plenty, doesn't work too soft
I want it very white! So I prepare the surface making it uniform
Perfect here, ok? It will get prettier and easier!
now I use roller, to soften up the brush marks.
Finished, is better to wait until tomorrow to have it very dry.
Remenber I told you the resin needs time to make a film?
Doesn't work using dryer, right?
So you choose how many niches you want to you bookshelf, the size you want
and pass Base para Artesanato Daiara (Handicraft Base Daiara) in all pieces.
The second day you sand! I already have some here I made yesterday.
then I will sand it. You can do it by hands if you want,
but it's easier if you have a sander machine, is better.
After you have to clean powder, of course
Now we are going to start painting with Tinta Laca Daiara (Lacquer Paint Daiara)
This Lacquer paint it is water-based,
has no smell, making it easier because you can do it anywhere
I can also do the lacquer paint with electric pistol,
today there are so many models, you just have to search
and will find a lot. You have just to ponderate what is better to you
Perhaps it doesn't need to be a professional machine,
But is not everyone who wants to buy a machine, because will paint like one or two pieces only.
But if you want to try it is possible and very easy
oh, you have to follow the manufacturer's instructions,
I can't teach it because each paint gun has a specific way to handle with
you have to learn how to use doing tests
sometimes you have to put some water to make it diluted
The Tinta Laca Daiara (Laqcquer Paint Daiara) has the perfect thickness, is not like PVA (PVA Paint Daiara)
the Lacquer by itself has a special shine, is very beaultiful
With paint guns, usually, 3 layer are enough to have a good cover and glossy surface.
But.. like I told you, it need practice
is not at the first time you will get it
so make tests, that's how it works!
Here I'm going to use the paint roller,
it's an option too
if you don't have a paint gun or you don't want to buy one, use paint roller, the result is the same
I have already painted other 3 niches, and I used this foam plate
where I put paint and take off excess from roller
considering the piece size, this roller is enough
there are biggers if you are going to paint a closet
but don't think is easier to paint with a big roller, because it's heavy, grabs more paint..
but at the same time a very small roller could leave marks!
the roller doesn't fit sometimes
there are some corners that I can't just use a smaller roller because it will make spots
So, i'm going to use a brush, doesn't need to be a special one
Look, a soft brush, midle size, ok?
can be bevelled too, whatever
Oh, I forgot to say,
when the bottle is new, and have rested on shelf, the products here in decant.
so before to open, shake well
it's basic, but is important and I wanto to tell you every little step, so you there can do it perfectly
pour paint on plate and start painting here
A lot of people complains these corners gets cracked.
Do you know why? Is the mdf wall glue,
it happens, but after a good painting will be invisible
So, first thing, here
apply with brush, like this
and after use a dry and clean roller. grab some paint and take off excess
start applying
I preferer to start painting inside
first inside and after outside
when you do the first layer, you don't have a total coverage, it's normal
Look, is just the first layer, after the second layer it starts getting better
because this paint is softer
don't push the roller all the time
start with a certain pressure and then smoothing the paint
doing it many times
pay attention what I'm teaching you now
push a little bit, a little, and then smoothing paint softly
very gently to remove marks, very soft to remove marks
doing a side after other, keep going
when you finish the last side, the first is already dry, so fast
so you can continue painting, go to the second layer
when I finish the second layer
if you are doing more niches, is even better
go painting and leaving aside the niches already done
just in one day you can do it
4 or 5 niches, is a good quantity, right? Is a very nice work!
After the second layer go take a break, and let it drying by itself
the paint must to evaporate, ok? take time!
doesn't work using dryer
after some minutes, give a third layer, and fourth too
Listen, some students told me they paint pieces white only with Lacquer Paint!
They don't want PVA Paint anymore
Because Lacquer give us this glossy and beaultiful finishing
If you are using a paint gun, 3 layer are enough, but if you are using roller do 5 or 6 layers!
The result is that you saw before
Do you want to see it again? I show you!
