today's topic is prayer
Do we pray the dame way as our mainstream brothers and sisters?
Good evening Lainie, what's...
what's your thoughts on this and then I'm gonna probably give a little bit of
kind of an introduction on this by Constant Chevillon
Alright. You know prayer is one of those things that
I think that I, and probably you
you know we grew up being trained in prayer, I don't know about you but I was trained
in prayer by my parents. Prayer was something that you did before meals
any before you went to bed at night and
I remember in both cases they were formula prayers
I think God is great, God is good, let us us thank him for our food. Amen.
and then there was now I lay me
down to sleep and as I got older that prayer got longer
as my mother became concerned about my behavior so
I wouldn't have to ask God, you know, to help me to cooperate
I didn't even what cooperate meant at that point but
it was something that I kinda
repeated
and even know I didn't necessarily understand at the time whatI was
praying
there was very much that sense that this was an important part of the day an
important thing
to do and that this somehow or another was a way of expressing reference to God
and so, you know, as I got older life became a lot more complicated in my
prayer life
became different and haphazard
in many ways in it's something that I still struggle with in my own spiritual
practice today
What about you Bishop?
Prayer for me has, I guess become
you know, more so than a daily practice. This is a several times a day
occurrence
you know most of that is due to both
certain prayers are common within my particular Gnostic tradition and also
within
many the esoteric traditions that I belong to you that have
several prayers throughout the day several particular for me.
But a lot of it comes
I think kind of this... for me kind of this deep-seated
route to the particular tradition that I'm in and
I kinda wanna, I guess, given a little intro on this
considering thats right now while we're
in the process... kinda worldwide is a canonization of Constant Chevillon as a
Gnostic saint
Constant Chevillon, he's got a lot of things to say on prayer but I'm only
gonna
use a few of his words, but at the beginning he says "Prayer is the only
true and high magic.
Ceremonial Magic too often places the will at the service of pride.
Prater on the other hand is a very humble aspiration
the finite towards the infinite. A person praying resembles a
desert striving to become a meadow full of flowers, and furthermore
he just got him and he beseech is and I think that is
absolutely beautiful yeah on in another paragraph
um he puts in our
only the scenes able to lose himself into this mystical transport
need real the beatitude no if pieces
is within you every man of goodwill is capable of reaching their
because every prayer is wholly when it realized by and feed
and hope even measured by human standards well your whole heart impure
in spirit do not become discouraged despite
the parent surely in ecstasy in your prayers if you ask for temple
neighbors do not be surprised if you do not receive anything
each the key to my price is not have this world and your desires we need very
little
when compared with the eternal gifts which is unknowingly Scranton to you
should from he's got what they see and fair bit
list to particular pieces out of his to
on document country earth to me are
are very kind insightful the kinder the nascent healing prayer
you know I think that freer can meet many different things so many people
arm drawing up like you
in a fundamentalist background I seen prayer
very much I think most traditions
arm sometimes has a way if asking God for favors
asking for this asking for got please God please help me in this please God
help me for this
current roomie be has now become something much more deeper than that
because this kind of his
esoteric dialogue with divinity
hmm
do you experience the prayer we ok
you experience your prayer life differently from say a meditation
yes sorry for me you know meditation and prayer are
kind of two separate issues say it and they're very close related
bed meditation jimmy is more of kind of the
Indian old oneself waiting for that still list
where r I see prayer is morow a conversation with God
and unity in which the device
unity yeah ok I'm and the selectmen your when you're communicating is at the idea
of fun
mutual understanding as you express yourself to God do you believe
that there's a aka and dialogue in which you be more open to got at that point
oh absolutely yeah yeah absolutely I think that is one of kind of the goals
at least
of prayer on for me is
dat it becomes a dialogue no different but I like you and I are helping right
now together
um prayer becomes a style I between you and the divinely
in whichever way you understand that they're going to be that becomes between
you and the divine
where I think this we're kinda true nose is getting started to sink in Carterton
you know in the box it doesn't even get really imparted fun
the ritual practices a prayer that we do Goodwin
win this dialogue starts becoming part of her very essence
where um worry are communicating with God
share I'm you know there's been
I can say that for me that there certainly have been times
where I've felt like there was a diet with and felt like I could actually hear
God's voice an although I've often found
bad you the the the dialogue may take place
through incarnate thanks he I might for example one
B&B be praying and then come upon a passage in the Bible or in some other
book
that speaks to me or that I might come in communication with somebody else
that speak something very out
very meaningful to me sure but I i think you know you're talking about you in
Constantia everyone was talking
have on it was talking about the desert hoping to become a medal maybe there's a
sense out when we when we were praying
and we're striving for opening ourselves up we become more
receptive to you know what that what
what a desert would need to become active to flower up like that
and died so it may be that in some cases there is a
dialogue with God but in other cases and
we just become more receptive to God's presence
in IE through other things and other people as well
absolutely you know what are the other things ish at the cottage shabby and
says
is a dad to be able to train a standard is necessary to become silent with
in interests are set to be able to pray in the spinners this early because China
within
arm get a pair of I think the process
old of trailer is streaming ourself
from that in the mundane life free herself from
shrum arm all the things a waste and the birds have work
all old household responsibilities of paying our bills
of the Caribbean boss of tax season of all the things that would normally waste
on a lie ish
and each by doing such
you know we sorted get this own
River Energy this river flowing through us
%uh love God spirits and light with us that I think
that is the transformation of the desert
into the metal do you think bed
a mean bone the things that I found in prayer
is the idea of giving up one's attention to the divine
and as you point out you know there there are many things that we become
burdened by
through the day and biitch the in prayer when when when when we're praying or
we have an opportunity to direct our our attention someplace else
and even even for a brief period of time his other things may need our attention
but even for those brief periods of time
to set down those burdens for a second and direct our attention to God
I hadn't can't be. an important
heart of our spiritual lives and
because maybe become the beach we orient ourselves
back to God and we can anchor ourselves a little bit better
I N wanted a more interesting disciplines that I've encountered
come across at my own prayer life a friend of mine father Rick McFarland
said
if you're on Facebook and people shared a concern or something like that
and you just type you know I'm going to pray for you
he said don't pray for them later pray for them
right then and there yet it's really easy to type lol pray for you
and then not do it rate and what hearsay said to me is you know
just pray for them right then and there and net has actually had
a significant impact on my prayer life and on my own spiritual practice
airs throughout the day being reminded that there are other people help their
who are who are suffering and you have concerns
and taking that time and being pulled out of my own
inner track being pulled out a bad into a very different place
and taking their time to pray for them
he and I think that's it a good point it's like a cure many things in life
if we had a progressive emperor of well let me naked on a get done later than we
expected
arlan bit we put a chance emergency if somebody's basically
here on this case it you mention the Facebook you know where where someone is
basically Chloe not sure for help on
you know the you're becoming like a first responder CD-rom
um let me respond to this right away
arm you know which I think kind of goes
into create the ideas you know what are the purpose is a prayer
you know what are the different types occur you know
is prayer only about what we first have been talking about which is
simply download old kind of unity with the divine
ordered does career become much more than that
on Dec special in your truck in Canada Nasik ideas for prayer
and I wouldn't say yes on trader
owned in again within many nasa traditions
um are deeply rooted with in
I'll very spiritual very esoteric practices and many of those
are calling for dividing interventions are lessons appeal lol there they are
blessings of peace blessings upon with some up on rollers severe
blessings upon married couples blessing upon me in a while
healthy children all these are all things as clergy that we'd chill
on on a regular braid basis is Dickens's
increases bigshots it is also something anything can
those who are are hardened should be actively participated share
and you know it it's interesting even in the Gospels I think it was same college
Oct about
years you there was a whole order up with us
and their job was to pray if that's what that's what they did and that was that
was their ministry now is considered to be
incredibly significant for the life of the community
and to this day there are a number
I love religious orders who focus entirely
on prayer sure dead alleged and the funny thing is
and 1 orders that the Poor Clares
there are closed at a cloistered contemplative order
they don't run schools they don't run soup kitchens all they do is pray
the stranger orders actually pray throughout the night and even get a
number a good night's sleep they just pray constantly
and 10 days orders was profiled in an article on Salon
and you should have seen the comments people were going not
you know these women are all neurotic they're all afraid of sex in the real
world
bottom yeah and they just you know this day just keeps contempt upon these women
indeed for prying and they saw prayer as being absolutely useless
and it was just him is just interesting because I've come
to realize and bet there are a lot of people who regard prayer is useless
there you know that they make me a few offered a prayer and they see it as
you don't want to take any action in you just want to pray
and do something privately an
how would you respond to that bishop well
fear Caitlin flabbergasted I'm in a hearing this story I mean
on that actually pretty upset yeah i mean here's you know one
a group of women who dedicated their right to prayer which I find it to be
you know a very noble you know for for anyone to cuddle with this ministry
quiet where the pre and the prayers at the hour's
daily in there trillion trillion near session lows
the souls have man in church peace on earth and four
many other great things they do in I guess my arguments many
all these naysayers would be where do you think our world would be today if it
wasn't for people like this with it
um we may be in a world of hurt in our world right now
bit um you know what I am I do believe that the
power of prayer through through a group like them and many others
has a positive effect are up on the
the world around us yeah
I'm in a by a guest it's done if you don't believe in God I suppose
prayer is seananners add you can be seen as useless for me
it remains that even in my most cynical moments
it seems to me again that when I am praying
when I'm call to prayer there is inattention
that has drawn all out of me in toward the real world
and E while I would probably argue that if her also person
ever does offers never does is pray and doesn't take any action to support or
help brothers and sisters are the people around them
yes you probably do have a problem there
on but in in
I know that when I take the time to lot to kneel down
and prayed for somebody I'm actually far more
likely to take actions
in some way or another you that I am if I don't have my attention drawn
at all to a condition
I can I speak for myself in that regard
interested well there this sounds like something we're going to continue maybe
in our podcast I after next
after al way um
I think they won't lead to can move into some new is right now
