MICHAEL: Thank you to Verizon for sponsoring today's episode.
Hello, people of Engadget.
My name is Michael Gorman, I'm a senior editor with your favorite tech news site.
-And I'm joined by... -My name's Mat.
I'm another senior editor with Engadget. Guess where we are?
-We're in Las Vegas again. -Are we?
It feels like we were just here and it feels like we kind of never leave.
But CES 2014 has arrived, and as always we are here in the desert
bringing you the latest and greatest tech news, along with Elvis impersonators...
-You just saw that guy there, right? -Yeah.
-You saw him. -Tacky stuff.
-As well as gambling. -Tacky stuff, good stuff.
-Bad stuff, just... -Some stuff in-between.
The stuff you want to learn about.
Yeah, so we got a little something special for you this year.
Not only are we gonna give you kind of an overview of the show floor,
but we're also gonna take you a little bit behind the scenes.
So not only will you see the likes of Samsung, Sony, LG-- all the big ones--
-but the trailer. -Yes.
The stage behind the stage.
Yes, you'll get to see where the sausage is made for the early adopter in all of us.
(music plays)
Here we are in the Main Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center,
where all the magic happens, and of course our first stop is...
the Engadget stage.
I've gotta run, go and do a stage interview, and then we'll hit the show floor afterwards.
So, see y'all later.
But it's not gonna stop there, though, 'cause we're gonna actually take a trip
backstage and see how all this comes together.
We've actually been streaming across the whole week of CES
plenty of interesting interviews, new products, exclusives
and a fair few podcasts as well.
So, come with me. Let's take a look.
So, Michael's up on stage, just behind us here.
We've been streaming around 14 live segments a day, so that's a lot of stuff.
And it's pretty much like a live studio operation here.
You can probably take a look-- we've got three cameras there pointing onstage.
And come over here and we'll show you how the inner workings all come together.
So, it's pretty serious business in here.
You can see there's a whole... there's a whole load of switches, cables...
And also, see, this is all live streaming on engadget.com.
We've got a video at the top of the homepage
where you'll be able to see everything as it happens here at CES 2014.
(indistinct conversation)
All right. Job done there.
-Brilliant. How did it go? -Went really well.
-As is to be expected, you know? I crush it. That's normal. -I guess...
So, now that my stage duties are complete, let's head on into the hall.
First off, we're going to the North Hall, so you'll see a lot of automotive stuff, lots of cars.
-Let's go. -Rockin' and rollin'.
(humming "The Benny Hill Song")
-We're cruising from the future. -We are.
It feels like we're flying, even though we're only about, hmm, 12 inches off the ground.
And we're listening to some of your music, Michael--
-a bit of Eminem, a bit of Rihanna. -RiRi. You know how I do.
You know, we gots to get down. You should check her out on Instagram.
It's worth, uh, it's worth looking at. (laughs)
-So, cars. -Yes.
Who's here?
There is Toyota, which we'll see in a little bit.
There's QNX. We've got Ford, we've got Audi.
-BMW. -BMW, absolutely.
-A lot of people... -Some self-driving cars.
That's right. Self-driving cars, kind of driver-assistance features.
Like the car... you're still driving but it controls the speed in traffic, those kinds of things.
A lot of very cool stuff. So, let's say we step out of the future car and actually
check out some of the real stuff that you'll be able to see in 2014.
(music plays)
We're here in Central Hall, and this is the home of all the biggest tech companies.
You can see Samsung behind us. Around the corner we've got Sony.
And a little bit further down, the likes of LG, and they're pretty cool looking.
Yeah, these are where you see all the biggest booths.
We're talking like thousands of square feet.
Really, because it's in the Central Hall, it gets the most foot traffic.
-So, why don't we add a little bit to that traffic with our own four feet? -Let's go.
So, here we are. We're about to leave the Central Hall.
But you'll notice that for every kind of one of the big boys that you see-- like Qualcomm,
Samsung, LG-- there's probably ten that you never have heard of
and you can only see them here at CES.
-So, let's head on down to the South Hall and see what we got going there. -Yeah, let's go.
So, we're outside the Las Vegas Convention Center halls, and we're just outside the lot.
You might be able to see just over our shoulder here the Engadget trailer.
-The legendary Engadget trailer. -Yes.
And we're going... we'll be going up there to check it out a little bit later in this tour.
Yes, so right now, just so you know, we're actually on our way to the South Hall.
In-between you can see in the lot here, there's registration tents, Gibson guitars...
uh, Tech Crunch, our sister site, is also located there.
Along with Audi and a few other car demos that are actually in the lot across the street.
So, let's head back inside and see what's going on in the South Hall.
Rocket Bunnies, lots of them.
-Of all colors. -All the colors.
Yes, shiny, not shiny...
We're right in the epicenter of the 3D printing area of CES, still in the South Hall.
And you'll see that in addition to MakerBot, you've got 3D Systems, Sculpteo...
Pretty much all the biggest names-- Stratasys-- they're all right around here.
There's no end to the number of little plastic figurines-- Iron Man heads, etc.-- you can see.
Random toroidal shapes that have been printed out-- super-useful stuff.
-Of course... -What?
I don't know.
So, as you can see, going through all the halls, CES is unimaginably huge.
We actually just went through the top floor.
There's another floor right below this one that's equally massive.
And there's all these other halls we haven't even mentioned.
There's halls dedicated to international companies, startups.
-Yep. -There's a whole lot of stuff to see.
Yeah. Not to mention, there's companies that don't even come to the actual trade show floor.
They're based in some of the hotels out on the Strip and everything like that.
But this kind of gives you an idea of the massive scale
and the challenge that we face every year covering CES, but we're happy to do it for you.
So, let's head on over to the trailer, so you can see actually how we do it.
So, here we are, the last stop on our tour of CES 2014 here in Las Vegas.
As you can see, we are at the magical Engadget trailer,
and this is where we spend quite a bit of our time, right, Mat?
Yeah, and it's got a new paint job. This is the brand-new Engadget logo.
Look, it's got curves and flat bits where there wasn't before.
And so yeah, this is where we file our stories. We have a nice sturdy internet connection.
Coffee, seats, everything we need.
-Snacks. -Snacks, most importantly, snacks.
Very important to get the snacks.
And also, this is the first year we'll be doing the Best of CES Awards.
So, let's go see if we can find the winners. Let's get a sneak peek.
-Get out! -Oh, God!
So, I guess sneak peeks aren't allowed.
And I guess that concludes our tour of CES 2014.
-See you next year? -Sorry.
-(sing-song): Selfies. -Selfies.
-In Las Vegas. -Selfie!
'Cause that's what you've gotta do! All right!
