Hey, this is Betsy from Classroom Teacher Resources, and you are about to see Part Two
of my students solving problems in math.
This one is about tater tots, and you’re going to see an interesting way they figure
out the magic word for this problem.
All right, so when you see tater tots, what are you thinking? Raise your hands. Sierra
Jade?
I think I’m thinking of Tatiana.
We think of Tatiana. And it’s food, so what do we think in math when we see a group of
food? Alondra?
Fractions.
Maybe fractions because we do share fractions. You’re absolutely right.
Maybe divide or minus because Tater Tot might be eating the tots.
Yep, she might be eating tater tots, so we might be...she might be sharing them, or just
eating some and leaving some.
She might be making some which would be multiplication.
Right. So let’s check it out. Let’s see. Tater tot, will you read that for us in our
big loud voice?
I was having a tater tot party for her...for me and...
For your six friends.
For my six friends. She...I gave each person a bowl with 15 tater tot...tater tots. How
many tater tots did I hand out altogether?
Oooohhhh. Interesting.
Twicky...
So tell me, Rachel, what should we do?
First we need to underline the important information.
Okiedoke. What do you got?
Do you want to do it?
Okay. Is yellow good? I picked yellow.
Yeah.
Okay.
Uhmm, we do...for her six friends...
Okay.
And she gave each person a bowl with 15.
Great. That’s okay.
How many...um...
So you’re underlining the question.
And...
Got a star word in there?
Uhmmm...
How many...
How many...
And what’s the star word?
Tater tot.
All right. I see hands in the air. What do you...what do you think, Kiya? Are we finished
marking this up? No? Jack?
I see a magic word.
You're just like the king of magic words today. What do you got?
Altogether.
What does altogether tell you? It’s part of multiplication. Absolutely.
Or addition.
It could be addition, but if it says...
Each.
...“each”
Then it’s multiplication!
...then it's multiplication. Love it.
All right, write your equations. Get it labeled. Well it doesn't say we're including Tater
Tot. She’s just giving 15, 15, 15, 15, 15, 15.
Oxana. What’s 6 x 1?
Plus 3?
The equation I am seeing...
Yes? Yeah. Do you agree?
Yes, Mrs. Weigle.
You, guys, should always say that. Not just "yes" but "Yes, Mrs. Weigle!"
Okay, 6 x 15 then. What is that? Tater Tot.
Well, I did 6 x 10 is 60; and 6 x 5 is 30, and then I add that up.
You went fast!
Fristy frosty.
90...90...tater tots!
That’s a lot of tater tots.
Tater tots.
Ooh...gosh, don't tater tots sound good right now?
Marshmallows!
Tater tots with marshmallows melted on top!
Ewww!
Alright. How did you feel about this one?
Because you did have that confusion...two weeks ago between the multiplication and division.
Some of you were feeling in the two range. What do you feel now?
You feel confident?
I feel like a four.
Tater tot, what about you?
I feel...
You got it figured out. All right, love it.
All right. So that was part two where students were solving a problem about tater tots. Interesting
use of magic words in how they solved that problem.
So stay tuned for episode three when students are solving a problem about super short pencils.
