Glendale Plumber, Ben Franklin Plumbing talks with Pat McMahon.
Okay, listen, stand by, if you will. Because we're talking about dangerous bathrooms in
the valley of the sun with Linda Stanfield of Benjamin Franklin the Punctual Plumber.
There are exploding sounds that occasionally come out of my bathroom, but it has nothing
to do with actual explosions in the toilet, what is this news story, Linda, that's going
around about potties that explode.
You know it's really important, it's really important. Most people know if they have a
pressure assisted toilet, and the way that you can find out is if you lift your tank
and there's another black, usually black, tank inside. That is usually a flush mate,
pressure assisted toilet part. That inside there is what's exploding. So they are being
recalled all over the nation.
Different brand names?
Mostly they're the flush mate. Pressure Assisted.
ok, alright. And those have been sold here?
They have been in the DIY (Do it Yourself) Stores. The news stations are saying at Home
Depot and Lowe's.
So if you're not sure, look inside your tank, if you have this big black tank, normally
it's black, go ahead and look at that model, should have a name on it, and then you can
get on the website and they'll tell you if it's recalled.
They sure got my attention when they said: look out for exploding toilets. Look out for
wasting water, we were just talking about waste management at the Phoenix Open, but
we're all wasting water here in the Valley of the Sun. Wait just a second, here's a statistic:
100 gallons per person per day??
That's the normal use, that's correct, that's the average normal use of people needing water
on a daily basis.
But we don't need that much?
We don't need that much. Most of the time it's used a lot in the summer for our lawns
and such like that, but inside we can really take an extra measure and make sure that our
bathrooms, where inside our homes the bathrooms are usually the most culprit of wasting water,
so a good area is the toilet. When we have a flapper that's wearing and water is running,
a lot of times you don't know it, you can't see it. You can simply put some food coloring
in the back of the tank, see if it comes through to the bowl. At that point you need to go
ahead and change your flapper.
Ok, so, where is this?
That's inside the back of the tank, normally.
Ok, and this wears out?
It does, it wears out with just normal wear and tear, chlorine in the water things like
that.
Alright show us demonstration lady about the rest of the props?
The other area that we waste a lot of water is in our showers. Cold water, yes you'll
waste water, not as much energy, when you use hot water in your showers you're also
wasting a lot of energy by heating the water. We now have wonderful shower heads that are
rated at 2.5 gallons/ unit, and they're usually labelled right on the shower head and it will
tell you. And so you really want to look for shower heads that are 2.5 or lower.
But am I gonna get, see I like stimulating spray.
Exactly.
I don't like 'blublbublu'. no.
No you will really get the same experience. We really have great shower heads now. This
is a wonderful showerhead from Kohler, we have great showerheads this ones from Waterpik,
we have a lot of choices out there, but we do want to go ahead and see if we can't find
ones that are rated 2.5 Gallons/ gallon of water being used.
And this comes from the bucket industry.
That's right, so you can test yours, if you're not really sure and it doesn't have a rating.
What you can do is put a 5 gallon bucket underneath your shower head. Turn your shower head on
and see how, time it, how long does it take to fill that up? It will tell you how many
gallons of water per minute that you're using.
I'm writing this on my bucket list by the way. Linda Stanfield, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing.
Can we save water and be good citizens and still lead a normal life or do I have to constantly
sacrifice?
No we really can and it really starts by teaching our young. Turn off the water when we're brushing
our teeth. Save water that we wash our veggies with and use it for plants, do a lot of different
things differently then maybe that we were raised, but we will find that our life is
just as fulfilled by using lower water items.
Pick one appliance or something in everybody's house that's the biggest offender.
I'd say the toilet. We can find, a little item like this can waste thousands and thousands
of gallons of water a year and it's very simple to change.
If you find this in your toilet just know, it could be the fault of an exploding potty,
you never know. Benjamin Franklin Plumbing has all the answers for you though, and they
provide it for your punctually. Aren't you glad you are watching the morning scramble.
