Efika computer presentation, Riverwash demoscene party
presentation done by
I'd like to say welcome to everybody
Right now I'd like to tell you about Efika computer
It is now produced by bPlan company
It was recently introduced into the market
It's called by some people the sucessor of Pegasos
Which is not exactly true
[Is it a personal computer?]
Sure. You can use it at home for anything you want if you have proper software
[What about multimedia?]
It's also capable of multimedia
Let's start with technical details
(details are available at http://www.genesippc.com/efika.php)
[Is there only one PCI slot?]
Yes, there's only one. We offer it to Amiga users because of MorphOS system.
Let's talk about software
It's free Linux distro Debian
but we're also offering a commercial OS called MorphOS
Let's start the presentation
As you see on screen, this is OpenFirmware
something like BIOS for Efika, converted from Pegasos computers
I'll show you Linux and then MorphOS for comparison
[Who's the author of this BIOS?]
bPlan. People who had Amigas before should recognize them from their turbo cards
Now we input 'boot' for starting the system, together with arguments
As I said before, I'll show you Linux for comparison with MorphOS
You can compare speed of booting both Linux and MorphOS on the same hardware
[Cay you play Quake?]
You can but unfortunately not Quake3
As you see the speed is not stunning. It's rather not for desktop but rather for things like a server
I'll run... Whatever you want, KDE or Gnome?
We're running graphical interface so it takes some time
As somebody mentioned, the gfx card is passively cooled Radeon 9200SE
We'll not show too much of this system, there are some drivers missing
As you see, it's not too fast
This system works rather slowly so we'll switch to MorphOS which is the main target of our presentation
[Imperial March :-)]
Let's go into MorphOS. I hope you'll like it better
Now you can see Ambient on screen. It's like Amiga Workbench
We'll start with it. It is getting more and more like Directory Opus
Good example is double click on ambient desktop
You can enter catalogues, copy files and so and do not use any other file manager
You can go back, search for files
[Is this Directory Opus embedded in the system?]
It's not Directory Opus. Ambient is new software written and use MUI
One of its creators is Kierownik
[Show yourself, Kiero!]
[What is MUI?]
[You don't know MUI? Boooooo! ; -)]
There are many features you won't see in any other OS
Scaling options were made by Kierownik
[Now you know what he's doing at night :-)]
(Stefkos explains unique customization options for Ambient)
Here we can setup every option for icons as also other options avaiable in other OS
You can define different types of files to be shown in the lister and what actions attached to them
You can customize it to look like Workbench, choose icons for the main toolbar
There are many advanced options
I just undid all my changes
Now you will see program to show and manipulate pictures
[What file system is it?]
Right now it's SmartFileSystem
[Does it have snapshots]
No, it doesn't
Now I show picture viewer
[Is it yours?]
No, it's Kiero's
We have some advanced image processing here
Changes are displayed in realtime on the left side of the screen
I'll show you now what you get bundled with MOS2.0
There's a PDF viewer
There's kaya, a music player... Well, I don't have a required library
There's Sketch, a simple program I did. Some people complain about this GUI, some like it
[Stefkos, will you tell us how much it is?]
About 100 euro
There are various options available
Another program is Graber With that application you can grab screen display and save it
I won't explain directory structure as it would take too long
Let's move on to the top thing in MorphOS now
MorphOS has now full 3D layer acceleration which makes all window operations very fast
Unfortunately it takes up more memory
One of programs which use it is Plender It's external app to customize working system
As you see, it all works on 128 MB RAM
The rear window is active and you can move it with full transparency
I can show you something more, Cube program
It was written by Kierownik. It's a commodity
I'm showing it now in one screen window only
[Can you make many workspaces?]
Yes, they are called 'screens' in MorphOS
Those features are available but programmers don't want to force the user to use them
You can choose if you want to use all those eye-candies or not
I'll close some windows
There's a preferences window with different options
Now it's in the options which screen you want the software on
This software will not be included in MorphOS but you can download it any time from the net
This is KShell, a highly customizable shell interpreter written by Jacek Piszczek, one of MOS developers
(Stefkos is showing MPlayer with a film in 3D desktop)
As you see it's still running in realtime
[A bit slow]
Well, it's only 400 MHz
Another thing is higly customizable GUI called MUI4
You can make your system look virtually like anything
All options change in realtime
For every button and class there's some customization available
As we're preparing for Euro2012, I can choose such frame
[Our systems are ready, what about our stadiums? Laughing :-)]
Now we're moving to 'Utilities' directory
There are various small but useful programs
In 'Tools' you can find programs for disk partitioning and recovery
As you see, this program for partitioning is completely different from the MOS 1.4.5 version
Unfortunately I can't run this as I have an older version...
As I said, this system is still a developer version
If you have any more questions, I'll try to answer them
[When will be MorphOS for that available officially]
My clearance level is too low to answer that question
[I have no more questions... In two weeks? :-)]
[Kiero, tell us!]
[Show us the browser!]
Yes, I forgot to tell you that probably Sputnik will be added to the system or available for download
After many years now we have a browser which supports up-to date standards
[WebCore based!]
Yes, it's programmed by a Polish guy, Marcik. Many tried but only he did it
[And he did it for free]
So thank you all for watching my presentation
You can come now here and play with the system for yourself
