J: Exercises?
>>> D: (unintelligible, facing away from the camera) German?
>>> J: The, uh, the Schubert?
>>> D: Yeah.
>>> J: Would you like to sing it for us?
>>> W: Do it! Do it! Duncan, do it.
>>> D: I don't have it memorized but I can read it.
>>> J: You can read it, absolutely. Do you got a copy?
>>> D: Nope. [moves to pick up a copy. none are complete.]
>>> J: Why do you have only the last page? what's up with that? Wow, we ran out.
>>> A: I have some. Do you want to use mine?
>>> D: Uh, sure.
>>> J: Yeah, if anyone's one copy.
>>> A: Not that I know the words.
>>> D: That's the version I picked too. Pages 4 and 5, right?
>>> A: Uh, Uh huh.
>>> J: Which key do you like to sing it in?
>>> D: Uh, same as all the youtube videos.
>>> J: Can I borrow someone's copy? Mine are all in different keys. I've got to print out
another D Major one.
>>> J: Good?
>>> D: Yeah!
>>> J: Um, this fast? or slower?
>>> D: I practiced a little slower, but that'll work.
>>> J: Like so? Ok. [begins playing]
[stops playing] Now, before you sing, right, I want you to take a moment, take a few deep
breaths, set your singer's posture, think about the scenario that you've worked out,
what the song is about to you.
If you've memorized it then you need to think the first words of the lines that are coming
up. The first words of each line will trigger the whole sentence. If you've sung the song
enough you know them but we forget sometimes which line comes where, so /du/ ...., /Wo/
.... There's only about eight lines in this poem, so eight first words.
Are you ready?
>>> D: Of course not. Let's go.
>>> J: Another thing you can do that is very dramatic in a song recital like this, given
your applause and so fourth, is to lower
your head and, when you're ready, to raise your head and the pianist knows you're ready
to sing. You don't need to say a word.
And with an introduction like this, too, it's great.
Why don't you do that. You let me know that you're ready by raising your head.
D: Oh, I'm ready.
[laughter]
Skip the dramatics.
>>> J: (something) [begins playing]
>>> F.Schubert: Du holde Kunst, in wieviel grauen Stunden,
>>> D: Mister John Reager.
Nice job.
>>> J: Well thank you. Likewise.
>>> D: Do you mind if I stop the tape and do some of the exercises too?
>>> J: Sure!
