They say an eco-friendly house can't be built in 150 days for $150,000, and I say it can.
I'm Allen Smith, join me as I push the limits with time, budget and creativity with the
Garden Home Challenge, exclusively on eHow Home. Water is very important, well, for a
lot of obvious reasons. But fresh, soft water is really desirable. Here on the farm, we
have wells, and we have hard water. And what does hard water mean? Hard water is defined
as water that has some positive ions in it, ions of calcium, magnesium, or even iron -- and
we have a lot of iron here. You can actually taste and smell hard water, hard water that's
really hard. The other thing that you need to be wary of is that hard water can, because
of these chemicals in it, can build up in your pipes and plumbing and cause you some
problems. So that's why here, we're putting a water filtration system in and also a system
that will takes these positive ions out of our water. What they'll do is they'll precipitate
out by the use of salt just NaCL. So why don't we step downstairs and I'll show you what
that system looks like. So what happens is the water comes into this system from the
well, the hard water. And then through these resin beads that are coated in sodium chloride,
an exchange occurs where the elements that make the water hard, in this case magnesium
and calcium, were removed. Then the soft water is ultimately kept in this tank here, and
then the water for the house is drawn from it. This is constantly going and replenishing
this tank. It's basically how it works. And remember, we're almost finished with the construction
of the house. It will be time to decorate it soon. Make sure you subscribe to eHow Home.
