Hi, my name is Andrea Belluso, and I’m also known as The Light Shaper from the Profoto.com/blog.
and today I’m doing a shoot for a Swedish fashion brand
Hederus
that does male sportswear with a twist.
We have great model called Phillip that is going to give this particular look to the shot.
I’m using the Profoto D1 3 Heads Studio Kit
which is very practical in this case because it's portable
it's so easy to mount. And we are short of time so it’s much easier to setup
so we’re ready for the shoot. Let's go!
The thing about the RFi softboxes that are included in the D1 3 heads kit
It that first of all they’re really easy to mount
Because you got these color codes
So the blue goes in the blue dot and so on and you just fit them really, really easily.
I got stuck in softboxes for many years
but now this deeper shape is really giving me that light that I really want from a softbox.
The 3 Heads Kit is also practical because it comes in a nice bag with wheels that I can carry on location wherever want.
But especially since it comes with two softboxes and three stands
so I'm practically ready to go when I have the bag with me.
Also I’m controlling the three heads totally separately and independently from each other
because of the Air Remote, part of the Air System
and that gives me full control of the light in terms of power
modelling lights setting and with different channels and groups.
The thing that I’m doing today with the softboxes is actually to create a hard light.
I'm doing that by removing the middle and front diffuser of the main light softbox.
And as you can see I’ve removed both diffusers from the softbox in order to give me this nice, shiny, silver interior
that acts like a huge reflector and that’s exactly what’s going to give me that
hard and punchy light onto the model and creating that strong light on the background.
And that shadow, I’m actually coloring it with a set of gels put in front of the softbox to lit the background
that has a softgrid on it.
The softgrid has two functions
both focusing and concentrating the light on the background, not giving me too much spill on the model
but also holding the gelatins in place.
And then the third light is actually a side light for the model
giving me a nice highlight on the chin and also on the clothes.
The pictures that were done with the 3 Heads Kit in the studio shooting this men’s sportswear fashion are now retouched
What will seem as a Photoshop effect is in fact an actual lighting effect.
I’m very much into keeping into keeping photography real
and doing it with lighting rather than post-production. So let’s have a look at what we’ve done.
They're very nice individually with this really nice colored, shadow background
but when we actually put them next to each other
you see that the effect comes out even more.
The way that we created the shadow on the background
is by removing the diffusers from the softbox.
The thing that I also gained by removing the diffusers from the softbox
is this nice contrast
a nice hard light which is perfect for the subject.
It’s a male model and he has actually got perfect skin so it's a great to do that but what I gain
is also nice details, nice contrast on the cloak of the jacket
And I think that the designer is going to be very happy with that.
So that's it for today and don't forget to catch up with me next time
and I’ll show you even more
tips and tricks with Light Shaping Tools. See you then!
