The distressing sight of whales stranded on a New Zealand beach. These animals stuck near
Farewell Spit near Golden Bay after efforts to re-float them failed. They had become stranded
last week and authorities tried their best to get them back out to sea. They did, however,
when they were found beached again, officials made a difficult decision. The Department
of Conservation shot the whales to avoid further suffering.
It's really frustrating for everybody to work really hard for two days and get the result
that we got this morning.
This area is known as one of the worst in the world for whales to get beached. At least
250 pilot whales have died here in the last five years, according to local media. The
latest eight whales to died were among around 65 who were first spotted off Taupata Point
last Tuesday.
