When I die,
this is gonna be what they talk about.
So, 2018 is Katahdin Trust’s 100th anniversary in business
and so they had a big party planned for all their employees on May 11th
at Morgan Hill Event Center in Hermon and they shut down the branches
they bussed all 150 employees from Fort Kent to Scarborough
to celebrate.
So they asked us if we would be willing to come by and take a group photo
of all the employees while they were all in one place.
If you’ve ever been in Morgan Hill Event Center you know that they have a beautiful dining area
with balconies up above, and you could easily take a photo up there
of everyone seated at the table, but
knowing that I’m an FAA certified Part 107 drone pilot,
they wanted to know if it would be possible, or if it would look good,
if we brought everyone out on the lawn and took a picture with the drone.
We said yes, that’s a great idea, but we took it a step further.
Now our designer Michele had made them a very cool 100 Years mark
that has been going on all the materials this year, from statement stuffers to branch posters,
so we thought wouldn’t it be really cool if we could get everyone on the lawn
standing in the shape of the 100 as we designed it?
So, while we all crossed our fingers for good weather,
we made this guy.
For the first time since I was a sophomore in high school, I got to use geometry.
We took measurements of each individual facet, and came up with a root length.
Using the Jacobs Method of crowd estimation, in case you were wondering
it’s 4.5 square feet per person to comfortably
give yourself some breathing room.
Works out to about 25 linear inches per person, multiply that by the 150 employees,
divide that by our root and we get a factor of 332.
Multiply that by our individual measurements,
and we knew exactly how long each individual segment had to be.
And that’s really cool and not dorky at all.
So, we bought 500-feet of string and
144 of these things, which are called cotter pins,
little metal things with loops which were perfect,
and we spent the next hour-and-a-half crawling around on our hands and knees
of the lawn of Morgan Hill Event Center
sticking little metal pins tied to string into the ground.
We had a very tight 15-minute window
in an action-packed itinerary they had planned for that evening, but
thanks to this plan and a group of very enthusiastic and cooperative employees,
we managed to pull it off in 20 minutes.
Watching it come together live on the monitor was really exciting
and the end product was something really unique and very cool.
Last week marked the one year anniversary since Katahdin Trust came on board with us
and we have more fun working with them every single day with everyone at that company.
Thank you guys for trusting us
not to drop a giant flying camera on your head.
