Hi. Thank you for your interest in Santa Barbara City College's Express to Success Program.
I just want to cover real quick in brief a few of the expectation that we have of our
students but then also some of the benefits that we offer in our program. Regarding benefits,
all of our classes are taught in the gateway method meaning that you have a free tutor
available to you in the classroom and often times the tutors have been in the class, they've
taken this learning community before, so they know the expectations and a lot of times,
too, they know the instructor and they're going to be there to assist you along the
way. Many of our core courses are taught in accelerated models meaning you are completing
two levels of either English or Math and condensing and compressing that into one. And then lastly,
all of our classes are taught in learning community environment meaning that's students
helping students. We also have program workshops. These workshops are specifically designed
and tailored for our students' needs and they'll be offered throughout the entire semester.
Our English and Math teachers are caring faculty and they want to see you find success in both
of those subjects. And then lastly, you have us as counselors. We're going to walk with
you and support you throughout your entire semester here. Seeing that there's so many
benefits to being in the program we also want to know that there are high levels of expectations
that we have for our students. Some of them that I'd like to talk about now are all of
our students are required to be in 12-15 units and we have the expectation that you're going
to maintain those units throughout the entire semester. And also there's a requirement to
study about 15-20 hours outside of class. So you're going to be in class for a little
bit but then we also ask that you spent a lot of time outside in the tutoring, in your
study groups, doing your homework, in the lab studying as well. We ask that all of our
students apply for financial aid. We know that finance is a big hindrance to student
success so we want you to have all these things in place for you can find success for your
semester. The last two, we want to be part of your learning community and that means
being an active member in the classroom, talking to your teacher, getting to know the other
students, and hopefully utilizing all the tutoring services that are available to you.
And then lastly, one thing that we hold in high regard is attendance and class performance.
We want all of our students to be in class on-time with your work ready to be turned
in. Now that you've heard both the benefits and the expectations that we have of our students,
we hope that you think whether or not ESP is the right fit for you. We'd love to have
you join the Express to Success Program.
