Hi, I'm Kim Scott and I'm an author and an academic and a Nyungar person. I began writing
after I became an English teacher and started working in urban and regional Australia.
I was forced to think hard about my own family history. So far,I have written three novels,
a non fiction book and a children's book. Despite mainly being works of fiction they
all provide an insight into the world and history of Aboriginal Australians since settlement.
In telling the stories I do, I'm also helping to highlight important issues in Australian
society like who we are, how to belong here and how important relationships of all different
kinds are to our well being.
My second novel Benang (from the heart) won several awards and saw me become the first
Aboriginal writer to win the Miles Franklin Award. It's since been won also by Alexis
Wright. My latest novel That Deadman Dance won the Regional Commonwealth Writer's Prize
and it feels good to be recognised for my work as a writer and to have the opportunity
to tell some of the stories of my Australia to people.
I like to think that by inspiring Australians of different cultures and races with my work
I'm helping make tomorrow better.
