Hi everyone. This is Carla from DrDietright.com. This is my first video, so bear with me if
it’s a bit rough. Today I want to share some personal experiences about running form
and how differently I run when I’m wearing different shoes on my feet. I wanted to put
myself to the test. So I took some footage of myself running so that I could observe
these changes. Most of us are taught to run heel to toe.
I recently learned from this book Born To Run that this is in fact not good form, and
can actually cause a lot of injuries. By the way if you’re into running this book is
a must read. The book mentions that branded shoes that market themselves to be best for
running actually help us run incorrectly. So my challenge was to see if I’m actually
running incorrectly. So let’s a take a look at my form shall
we? Let’s start with my Asics. I absolutely lovely shoes, they’re soft and supportive,
they help me bounce along but am I running right in them? Look at how I run heel to toe,
heel to toe. I rely a lot on the support on my shoe gives me, but that puts a lot of pressure
on my spine and that’s not good. Now let’s take a look at my Puma’s. I hate these shoes.
Ironically because they offer no support, but does this limited heel support stop me
from pounding onto my heel? The fact when you look at the video you can actually see
that I’m landing a lot flatter on my foot. That’s interesting.
Now let’s look at bare foot running. I can’t look at rely on padding or support, just whatever
my foot offers me. If I land on my heel it would hurt and from the video you can see
that’s its quite a flat landing and my weight is closer to the middle of my foot.
Well as expected I have to learn how to run properly. A great way to learn is something
called the a hundred up. It’s pretty simple, kind of like matching on the spot. Notice
how my foot hits the ground. I admit I was stumping a bit here to make more emphasis.
I also add a little prance to my steps to emphasis a running motion. You’ll also notice
here how important it is to put the action into your knees; in fact my knees are very
active in this movement. So to conclude, I think certain shoes allow
us to be lazy enough in our form. It doesn’t mean that they’re bad shoes, it just means
that we need to learn how to run better. So don’t go and throw away your sneakers, or
trainers, or whatever you want to call them. So I’ve got a lot of practice to do and
the hundred up will definitely help perfect this form. I hope that this video helps you
perfect your form and keeps you injury free. For more information about running, Born To
