In the beginning, God made... well, everything.
More specifically, he made Earth and on it, he placed us, human beings.
Fast forward a bit and through His glory, we have created some really great things,
like cars and transport routes, sanitation systems, the world wide web, cameras that
can photograph space, financial systems, housing, clothing, books, music… Phew!
Sadly though, not everyone has all of these things and as a result of corruption, greed,
injustice, poverty and dictatorship some people have nearly nothing.
Take for example, Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Once a major exporter
of coffee and sugar but now ravaged by violence. Add to this the horrific earthquake in 2010
and Haiti is a country in desperate need of help. To this day, still 1.3 million people
live in temporary shelter.
And even closer to home here in Southampton there are people failing to make ends meet.
As the economy sinks, the number of people needing food from the Southampton Basics Bank
rises. In 2011 Basics Bank fed people 4578 times and clothed people 1456 times.
In 2012 that number has increased every single month.
But don’t panic, it’s not too late. You can do something about
it, you can make a difference. This Christmas, you can help.
At Above Bar Church over the past couple of years we have
been learning to buy less and give more in our Christmas
appeals...
This year, our Appeal will be divided equally between Tearfund's
work in Haiti and the Southampton Basic’s Bank, to help those
who really need it.
Please give what you can using the envelopes around the
church building. Oh and don’t forget to Gift Aid your donation if you can.
There will also be bucket collections at our Carol services and
on Christmas day. Please keep your eyes peeled for those too.
We are so blessed to live in a world with so many great things.
This Christmas, please remember those who don’t.
Thank you.
