[Ted]: Hey, we were back. We have got our traditional English breakfast now. We take
care of our teeth. Don't forget to brush. From Lynden Hills Dentistry we have got Dr.Nader
Jahshan with us. Thanks for coming in again. [Dr.Nader]: Thanks for having me here.
[Ted]: You-know what, When I drive down Lynden road and I see a nice sign outside. You talk
about dental emergencies. When should somebody make your phone a ring?
[Dr.Nader]: Well, when there is a dental emergency, the sooner the better so, really immediately..
[Ted]: Key - Pain or key-I don't feel something right?
[Dr.Nader]: Well , Either one, when there's pain or something wrong and especially with
sports... you know when there's an accident and a tooth breaks, the sooner the better.
[Ted]: Do you get some people saying, Oh I don't bother the doctor. But you know you've
got that big sign out there, that says bother me.
[Dr.Nader]: Yeah, I mean that's what we are here for. We are here to help and we're here
to serve and especially when there is an emergency, Time is of the essence. If a tooth gets knocked
out, the sooner we can get it back in the better the chances of surviving.
[Ted]: We are going to talk about spending a little or may be saving a lot, right now.
We are going to talk about preventing dental injuries. And we are going to talk about mouth
guards, we have different choices. What variety are you looking out there at your hand.
[Dr. Nader]: Well, this type of mouth guard is a custom fitted mouth guard and this kind
of mouth guard offers the most protection that there is out.
[Ted]: Oh, it's going to be a need for somebody, as you hold that up, they see it on camera,
they are going to think that, that is attached to the teeth.
[Dr.Nader]: Pretty much. It's a vaccum form. So it's a very tight fitting mouth guard and
even to remove it, the person has to put all their fingers in the mouth just to pull it
off. So, it's very very comfortable and that way it offers the most protection.
[Ted]: Now if the player goes out and gets that done or the parents get it done for the
players, there is nothing more annoying than seeing them, not having it on. So I guess
the main key is that get that in there and don't turn into a true toy.
[Dr.Nader]: Absolutely. It only works when it's in the mouth.
[Ted]: So, there are different other kinds of mouth guards. I guess it is the Cadillac.
[Dr.Nader]: This is the Cadillac. This is the standard for most sports and most professional
sports. There are other types out there that are over the counter. But, they are very limited
in the type of protection and the comfort that they have and one of the most important
things is with the mouth guard is especially is, if someone goes with the over-the-counter
mouth guard, it doesn't offer the same protection, because it doesn't fit as well.
[Ted]: We are looking at your friend on the screen right now, and I was kind of surprised..
Everybody is talking about the mouth guards because of jaws in place, you're reducing
the risk of concussion but against there is dental trauma that can last for years that
could happen as a result of not wearing a proper mouth guard?
[Dr.Nader]: Absolutely, most accidents are actually not damage to the teeth. Most accidents
happen to the jaw. So it's usually a blow to the bottom of the jaw. And what happens
in that case is all that force goes right up and right into the TMJ. so either there's
a fracture that happens there or it causes a lot of damage in stretching of the tendants
and so for years after that there's a lot of problems with the joint and pain in clicking
and popping. [Ted]: You said the TM...
[Dr.Nader]: TMJ - The Tempermendable Joint, which is just right here.
[Ted]: So,that's basically, and you are going to feel that, and you are going to may be
thinking, it's something else, when in reality you may have suffered the trauma a while back.
[Dr.Nader]: Absolutely, It could have just been the trauma, because most traumas, when
especially it's a blow to the side, will shift the jaw over to one side like this.
[Ted]: And down the line, of course with the formation of teeth, you can end up with even
a uneven bite. [Dr.Nader]: Absolutely, it can change the
bite, it can damage the joints, it doesn't work properly.
[Ted]: There really is isn't a sport where you shouldn't be wearing a mouth guard. Is
there? [Dr.Nader]: May be curling.
[Ted]: ...You don't get a lot of people in the mouth, in the .... I think in terms of
when I coach young kids in baseball, I had them wear mouth guards.
[Dr.Nader]: Absolutely yes! Base ball, Basketball, hockey specially is a big one. Any sport where
there's a potential for contact especially to the face, it's recommended.
[Ted]: So if you get a patient, They get in touch with you and say, listen I would like
to be able to do with this- what kind of procedure are we talking about. How long does it take
to put it together. [Dr.Nader]: Well, it's very easy. The 1st
appointment, we make some models of the teeth and then we have it made, it takes about a
week and then the 2nd appointment we just make sure that it fits comfortably and it
works well and they can function with it . [Ted]: And we talked about the Cadillac. That
will be the most comfortable mouth guard. Because we had struggles with my son, because
he hated having something in his mouth. [Dr. Nader]: It is the Cadillac. But it's
very cheap to have made and especially when we have the sports guard clinic. It's very
cheap for kids and it's very affordable. It's not much more...
[Ted]: In your next visit, we will get into those little injuries that occurred, because
we had too much fun talking about preventing injuries, but again I want to reaffirm one
other thing. When in doubt make the phone, make the phone ring.
[Dr.Nader]: Yes, Absolutely. [Ted]: Dr.Nadar Dishan, Thanks for coming.
[Dr.Nader]: Thanks for having me here.
