I'm a single parent. I have five kids, five.
There's not a day you don't get up thinking about how can you better yourself.
Thinking I want to do this. I want to do more for them.
My mother died. I was still young. My sister raised me, so I didn't have to.
Didn't nobody make me go to school. I fought because I wanted to fight what people told me.
They said I'd never make it. I'd never be nothing.
So when I had that kid early, it just really made it even harder, like oh. The world changes.
After I went and got my GED, my GED teacher and me set up goals.
The woman had a gift to teach.
Miss Jeri, oh my goodness, she kind of shined light on things to let me know how smart I really was.
She kept reminding me of my goal, you know, and it just done so much for me.
I believed her, I just, and I began to believe in myself more and more everyday just going there.
I told her what I wanted to do.
I wanted to compete in hair shows, I wanted to do, so we just made all of these goals and stuff like that.
And my GED, that was a short term goal.
As a student when I was in school for cosmetology and I competed for the St. Louis Hair Show.
So I said you know what, I am going to compete and I am going to win.
It was just that confidence built. I mean it all started with that GED.
They called my name out for first place, it dawned on me then like wow.
I can do anything. I can do it, you know.
Oh they were so proud. They told everybody.
They was so proud they went to school and told my mama won a hair show competition.
It's kind of amazing, like when I think about it I get excited because now I know my worth.
And I am telling you I would be really farther in life
if I would have just took out them two months a long time ago.
So I just want to encourage anybody to do that.
Make that sacrifice, go ahead and do it, if you don't it's going to be harder.
You gonna make it easy. You gonna really make your life better.
