Hi! I'm Charles Connelly and I am a state certified fire-fighter and on behalf of Expert
Village, this is basic fire safety. After developing a safety exit plan with your family,
you should probably review windows and doors so that everybody is familiar in the household
how to operate them. You should still go over them with your children even though there
might be safety concerns. They should be able to open all these windows so that they can
exit in time of need. In this case, we have a window. Windows are generally locked from
the top and bottom fastens. Make sure that the locks operate properly and that you can
unlock. Make sure that the window can slide with ease and that you can pop the screen
out in some fashion. Some windows lock, some windows might have a secondary lock and the
bottom track. Don't forget to review that with your children. Another concern that you
might want to keep in mind is that after you exit the window, what obstacles may be in
the way; in this case, we have a pool. After reviewing windows, you should do the same
with doors. In this case we have a front door. Most front doors swing inward; might want
to keep this in mind. You should review the lock systems for children so that they will
be unable to lock it. In this case, we also have a child safety protecting device. I know
this is to keep your child in but in times of emergency, this might get in the way, so
you might want to be able to take it off or you might want to teach them how to use it.
Make sure that the door opens completely and has no obstructions in the way and that the
hinges work properly.
