This Pennsylvania Severe Weather Awareness Week web briefing is brought to you by the
National Weather Service in State College. The week of March 3rd through March 7th has
been designated as Severe weather awareness week in Pennsylvania. Each day, a different
topic will be addressed to highlight significant severe weather hazards and safety precautions
to take when severe weather strikes. Today's topic is tornadoes. We will explain the difference
between a tornado watch and a tornado warning, and give you tips on what to do when a watch
or warning is issued for your location.
A tornado watch gives you advance notice that conditions are favorable for the possibility
of tornadoes. When your in a tornado watch, be sure to stay alert for changing weather.
Remember, a watch is not a warning. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado is about
to strike, so you need to take immediate action to protect your life and property. If you
are at home or in a small building, go to the basement or an interior room on the lowest
floor. If you are in a school, hospital or shopping center, go to a pre-designated shelter
area. If you are outdoors and cannot get to a safe building, as a last resort take shelter
in a low-lying area and cover your head. For more information, please visit our webpage
