Joel: The flowers, the landscaping, the lawn! Courtney: Watering is the key to getting
your yard looking this lush. First- time
home buyers don't always get a lush yard to start out with, takes
time and a little care to get there. Joel: Got that right.
Courtney: It would be nice if it rained regularly enough to keep your lawn green
but chances are you'll need to take matters into your own hands with one of
these.
Joel: Wise watering is the key to being a good gardner,
but make sure your up on your community's watering regulations and restrictions
before you set out on your sprinklers.
Courtney: Grouping plants with similar water needs will make your job a lot easier.
Be sure to give newly planted stuff an extra drink to get them started strong.
Joel: And be on the look out
for areas that might look like they're getting dry. Spot watering
can help problem areas in your lawn and garden get back to green.
Courtney: Regular weed patrol and laying down mulch can help your beds retain more water for the plants.
Joel: You can install a full sprinkler system, but if you're on a
tight budget like I am,
the basic equipment will work too. Courtney: Get a good sturdy hose and a sprinkler appropriate
for your size yard. Joel: An adjustable nosil also comes in handy, just make sure you
have enough hose to reach every corner of your yard. Courtney: So you've got the will to water...
Joel: And you've got to gear! Courtney: Here's a few tips to make the most of your irrigation, obligation.
Joel: You should aim to water in the morning to minimize evaporation. Water about one inch
per week to try to water deeply rather than frequently to encourage
regrowth.
Keep your lawn mowed the recommended height for your type of grass.
Keep your lawn clear of grass clippings and weeds by regularly dethatching and
aerating it.
Watch for areas of runoff where water isn't making it into the soil
Courtney: Shrubs and trees need watering attention at the base where the roots can get maximum saturation.
A soaker hose like this does the trick. They're also excellent for flower beds.
Joel: Other accessories like this spray wand and
watering can are
good for getting into those tight, delicate or small areas. Courtney: And for the ultimate
set-it-and-forget-it, a drip irrigation system and timer like this one
can do the work for you everyday.
Joel: If you're lucky enough to live in those areas with regular rainfall, you might
want to consider a green solution like a rain barrel. Courtney: Whatever watering needs
your yard demands, there's an easy solution. Joel: Easy as 101. See you soon.
