i'm really excited to see all of you here today into c_b_s_ program going
forward
elected you little bit of a history
it grew out of and
grant
at UMD received from and asap
national science foundation
advance program
the goal of the program is too
increased pin number of women faculty into spam science
technology engineering in math fields
and it's a data collection approach where we evaluate what the environment
is for these faculty and then decide how bast to improve that environment so that
we can improve those numbers
so how does this relate to the program
we started off by collecting data just to find out what is the status of women
faculty in the stem fields here at u_n_ d
and in a word it's not correct
and then to look at why alerts things good for them and it turns out that that
climate or the environment is just not as good as it could be
and when we look at what aspect of the climate or the environment that's most
important
two women stem faculty and i expect all faculty
is their departments
and then when we think about looking at the departments
we think about
what has the most control old for the climate within that department
and back
is the department had
all of the backs
but we take a step further and say
what did the department heads have to do and we say
lau devon incredibly difficult job
and so we've set up this program to help you do
you are jobs better
so that you can help your department have a better climate and therefore have
all of your faculty
have off more success
i'd like to think about it this way
the women stem faculty are butterflies in an environment
we can look at those butterflies defeat they're not really doing very well but
we don't understand why they're not doing well we think maybe they need a
lil more foods we give them a little more food but that doesn't really help
them well we put them often grueling closures
but that doesn't really help that
as we look more broadly and their environment and when we interesting spec
are going on in their environment
we can correct it and allow the butterflies to blossom or two floors
and when the butterflies flores everything else in that environment
also floor sis
it's very similar
to d_d_t_ that we found in our environments back in the nineteen
sixties
and because spray and there's ten eggs where the indicators the s species they
told us something was wrong in that environment
when we took d_d_t_ out of the environment to correct for the osb race
it turns out everything is better
so i'm very excited that by uh... looking at the butterflies insane what
will make things better for the butterflies at u_n_ d
well actually
all of the faculty and all of the departments across the wendy
and again it comes down to
you folks as hence of the department's and i know that you have the most
difficult jobs on campus
your asked to do so many things and so true this program what we hope is that
you can gain the tools
to do your job better
and through this program it's going to be all of you that will be helped
advising
we're we're going with this program so that you get the tools
and the skills that you need to go forward
alight and with at ten not weight
to see in the spring what has emerged from this pull efforts
and to see
where you guys have com what you have done and to the foundation picture's lei

department's
