How Cyril and Method pilgrimed through Hodonín
Let's see, what happened in Moravia more than thousand years ago.
The Prince Rastislav wanted the Moravians to get some education.
He also wanted the divine service to be led in „Old Church Slavonic"-language.
That's why he asked the Byzantine emperor Michael
to send a couple of educated men to Great Moravia.
Yes, they are here:
Cyril and Konstantin and Method.
Actually, Cyril and Konstantin are one person,
which means, there came only Cyril and Method.
From Thessaloniki, it is a very long to Great Moravia.
Cyril and Method had to come through Hungary.
Hopefully they arrive to Great Moravia with no problems.
this way
863. Yes, they are here.
Prince Rastislav welcomes them.
How are you, guys?
What was your journey like?
Now, we shall eat and drink something. Sit down, pls.
After you relax,
you can start the education!
Cyril and Method settled near Hodonín in a big village.
There were 12 churches here!
They started to teach (and preach) the Christianism
and they also taught how to teach it
and spread it out - not in Latin,
but in the „Old Church Slavonic"-language!
Cyril thought out a new alphabet, the so called „Glagolitsa".
This new type-face had 41 symbols and it was written....
Glagolitsa....slivovitz...
For example slivovitz was written in „Glagolitsa" the following way:
But Moravia's German neighbours did not like it.
They started to rifle through it and they did it for so long
that there were some wars here.
The Prince Rastislav was thrown down and Prince Svatopluk came to the throne.
But Svatopluk did not like both of them.
Method was jailed (in a hole) for 3 years
-- the conditions there were very bad: cold, heat and rain.
In total, Cyril and Method lived in Great Moravia for 7 years,
but their cultural heritage is still here.
The Great Moravia did not exist any more,
Slovakia became a part of Hungary,
and we can see, that there are built big castles near the low-lying forts.
The castle in Hodonín had an important function -- to watch an important ford over the river Moravia,
where a key business-road from Bohemia to Hungary passed through.
Where is a castle, there is also a pre-castle area.
This pre-castle area was first very small, but later on, it became bigger
and finally it was declared a town by Queen Constance.
Hodonín city
The town had its governor
and an executioner.
And what did the executioner have?
He had a gallows not far from the „Black bridge" („Černý most").
But Hodonín did not have a real rampart.
They only had a wall with sharp posts and a moat.
Nevertheless, one thing is very remarkable
it's the fact, that the well-known Hungarian fighter Matthias Corvinus
was not able to capture this town.
He was not able to do so despite having a special group of well-trained soldiers
that were awarded 1 ducat per head of a killed enemy fighter brought to Matthias.
Sometime they even brought 585 heads to Matthias
who then ordered to wing those heads by a bow to the Czech encampment.
Something, Mr. Guth-Jarkovsky could not praise them for.
At the beginning of the 16th century,
the Lords of Kunstat rebuilt the town and the castle.
They had to rebuild it because that was the condition to obtain it into their possession.
Try to guess, which side of the castle was secured best?
Yes, you are absolutely right, the one oriented to Hungary...
In the 17th century,
the town was totally destroyed by the 30-years-war.
Only three houses, pardon, only two houses were saved.
All city council-members died in this war.
Now we are in the 19th century already, which is connected with the industrial progress and the steam.
On 1st May 1841, the first train of the „Ferdinand"-railway went through Hodonín.
9 years later, in Hodonín was born the Father of the Czech state,
Mr. Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk.
In 1907 Úprka brothers, Max Švabinský, Alfons Mucha
and many others found art group called "Společnost výtvarných umělců moravských".
And how is the city of Hodonín looking now?
Nowadays, Hodonín is a modern town with a big folklore- and grapevine-tradition
especially the pressed wine in bottles with a stopper.
The one, who does not visit a wine-cellar here,
cannot say, that he visited this town.
When you (after a night spent in a wine-cellar) come out to get some fresh air,
you could try a a shipping on a ship
through the „Baťa"-floating channel,
or you could visit the village Mikulčice (situated near Hodonín)
where you can also see something more about Cyril and Method.
Then you can have some wine....or a Hungarian salami.
