I think one of the most challenging things
about being a disease detective
is that the job can require you to work in situations
where there's a lot of uncertainty,
including uncertainty about the risks to yourself
and to the community, and at the same time knowing
that the community's depending on you
to figure out what's going on
and to make interventions that will protect their health.
I think there are two things that really motivate me
to continue to do the work that I do.
First, as a physician,
one of the guiding principles of my profession
is to protect the health of my patients
and to improve their health.
And I think that really translates to my work
as a disease detective,
where the overall goal is to improve the health
of the community.
The second is that working in public health
means there's always a new mystery
and there's always a new challenge
just around the corner,
and that can make this job very exciting and very fulfilling.
