Yet another Korean film has hit the 10-million ticket milestone.
"Miracle in Cell Number 7" is the latest film to hit the mark in just a month, and it's
the third film to do so in seven months.
Park Ji-won reports, that the boom in the Korean film industry isn't just a hit at home,
but also making inroads into Hollywood.
"Miracle in Cell Number 7" is now the eighth Korean film in the nation's history that exceed
the milestone of 10 million ticket sales.
It tells the story of a father with the intelligence of a six-year old,... sent to prison for a
crime he didn't commit.
The plot is centered on the man's love for his daughter.
The film has touched the hearts of many since it opened at the end of January.
"I saw the film with my family.
The acting is good and the main child actress is so cute.
I kept on crying until the end of the film.
It is really touching."
"I think the film can contribute to changing stereotypes of the mentally challenged, I
believe the film's emotional approach was well received by audiences."
"I wrote the screenplay with the heart of a loving father.
I hoped that the story of sacrifice and love could be shared with viewers, and I am so
happy that my sincerity has struck a chord with the people."
The film is the first family comedy to hit the 10 million ticket mark and the third to
do so in the last seven months.
"The Thieves" was the first in August, "Masquerade" the next in October.
It's a sign of the times, experts say.
The number of moviegoers in January came in at more than 20 million nationwide in Korea,
a more than 20 percent increase from the same month last year.
And the number of moviegoers so far in February has also topped 20 million, a whopping 59
percent increase compared to last year.
"In addition to the strong performances of Korean films and the Korean film market, the
nation's three most acclaimed directors are releasing their first English language films
this year, starring some of Hollywood's big actors and actresses."
Korean director Park Chan-wook's psychological thriller "Stoker" comes out this Thursday,
while director Kim Jee-woon's Hollywood debut "The Last Stand" has already hit silver screens
across the world.
